Virgin River is one of the most-watched and most beloved series on Netflix. Based on the books by Robyn Carr, the series follows Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge). Mel is a nurse and midwife who leaves her life in Los Angeles behind for a fresh start in Virgin River. Amid this new chapter in her life, Mel falls for Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), a retired Marine who is also the owner of the town’s bar.

The pair have had some major ups and downs over the course of the first three seasons of Virgin River, but will they get married in season 4?

‘Virgin River’ could come sooner than expected

Filming for the fourth season of Virgin River finally wrapped in December 2021 just before the holiday season. However, Netflix has not yet announced a release date for the new episodes. Typically it takes about six months for a show to move through post-production before debuting on the platform so we believe a release date will be between July 2022 and September 2022.

However, Henderson says a release date might be closer than we think. The actor recently shared an image of himself in the voiceover booth doing some audio for the new episodes, he captioned the Instagram photo, “Back at work…getting season 4 good and ready for consumption.”

‘Virgin River’ Season 4 could finally see Mel and Jack getting married

As we know, Mel interrupted Jack’s marriage proposal at the end of season 3 to reveal her pregnancy. She also revealed that she’s not sure if the baby is his.

“If it’s not Jack’s baby, Jack and Mel are naturally going to have some tough times ahead,” Breckenridge told E! News via Hello! “It would be immensely difficult. That would be extremely challenging, especially for Jack. If he’s gonna stick around, if he’s devoted to Mel, that’s gonna be hard to have a baby that’s her dead husband’s baby. That’s just, like, asking a lot.”

Henderson also echoed his co-star’s sentiments. As we know, Jack isn’t a man of many words and he’s going to need some time to process everything. “At the drop of a hat, she goes and [uses the embryos she had with] her dead ex-husband,” Henderson told TV Insider. “It’s rather a quick reaction to Jack’s rejection. Jack would have felt that perhaps they could talk about it or that she would maybe give it a couple of weeks before deciding to do that.”

Still, as fans of Carr’s book series know, marriage is still very much in the cards for the pair in the upcoming season. “Eventually, they are going to get married,” Virgin River showrunner Sue Tenney explained via Devdiscourse.

‘Virgin River’ Season 4 could have callbacks to season 1

As we await an official release date from Netflix, there are some major hints and clues about what fans can expect to see when Virgin River Season 4 does premiere. As we know, Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) has married a gaslighting lawyer, and Mel has revealed her pregnancy to Jack. Also, Brady (Ben Hollingsworth) has been arrested for allegedly shooting Jack, and Hope (Annette O’Toole) was in a terrible car crash.

Tenney has revealed that we will learn the paternity of Mel and Jack’s baby this season. She’s also explained that Hope will survive and that we’ll find out who shot Jack.

“The audience will be genuinely surprised at who’s behind all of it,” Tenney told TV Insider.  She added, “If we get the actual reveal [in season 4], it would detail more of how this all was intertwined. The webbing of that story goes all the way back to the first season, so it’s a connective tissue that goes through four seasons.”
