‘WandaVision’ Star Paul Bettany Regrets Admitting He Hadn’t Seen This Marvel Movie

Paul Bettany plays the second word in Marvel’s new Disney+ series WandaVision. Vision was one of the Avengers, and the love interest to Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). WandaVision finds the Marvel superheroes living inside classic television sitcoms. Bettany has been diligently doing the press rounds again to promote the show, and beginning to regret something he said in previous interviews.

Bettany appeared on Pete Holmes’ You Made It Weird podcast on Jan. 20. Holmes brought up one soundbite that got him in trouble before, so Bettany set the record straight .

Paul Bettany was in the Marvel movies from the beginning

Marvel vans didn’t see Bettany in the MCU until Avengers: Age of Ultron. Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) made Vision to help the Avengers battle Ultron. Vision took part in Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, but not Endgame.

But, Bettany had been part of the Marvel films since the very first official MCU film, Iron Man. He was the voice of JARVIS, Tony Stark’s computer. Later, in the Agent Carter TV series, Marvel fans would meet the real Jarvis (James Darcy) who was Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper)’s butler. The voice of JARVIS appeared in the first three Iron Man films and the first Avengers before he took corporeal form as Vision.

Long before ‘WandaVision,’ Paul Bettany admitted he hadn’t seen this Marvel movie

In a 2012 interview with Digital Spy for the movie Blood, Bettany admitted he hadn’t seen Iron Man. However, he clarifies why he even talked about prior Marvel films in that interview.

“The question came because I was about to be Vision and I had been JARVIS,” Bettany told Holmes. So the question came up.”

However, there was more to Bettany’s comment than you ever saw. Marvel movies were not alone in Bettany’s omission.

“That was a really great lesson in media,” Bettany said. “What actually happened was this. I went, ‘Oh, I don’t know. I’ve never seen Iron Man. They’re kids movies, aren’t they?’ Ellipses. ‘Just to clarify, I never see any of my movies.’ That bit wasn’t in. They went, ‘Wait a second, this is going to be so much better if we cut out the I don’t watch any of my movies and just say I’ve never seen Iron Man, they’re for kids.”

Paul Bettany caught up on Marvel films long before ‘WandaVision’

The role of Vision actually inspired Bettany to catch up on Marvel films, including the ones he was in. Avengers: Age of Ultron would open in 2015, so by then Bettany thought he should brush up.

“I actually have caught up,” Bettany told Holmes. “I decided I should really watch them when I played Vision and I was like these are great. I really love them. Actually, it’s also really nice to promote something that you’re really proud of. WandaVision is really bonkers and I do love it. I really do.”
