‘iCarly’: Was Jennette McCurdy Close With Her Cast Mates While Filming the Show?

On the latest installment of her Empty Inside podcast, McCurdy opened up about her time working with her 'iCarly' co-stars. Similar to her character Sam Puckett, McCurdy had close relationships with her castmates, whom she considered to be "great friends" during her time on the show.

Since the launch of her podcast, Empty Inside, actor Jennette McCurdy has reminisced about her time as a Nickelodeon star.

Though she’s gotten candid about her past roles and how she’s “embarrassed” by the characters she’s portrayed over the years, McCurdy took a different turn on the latest episode as she opened up about her working relationships with her former iCarly cast members.

Jennette McCurdy fondly recalls her time with her ‘iCarly’ castmates

On the latest installment of her Empty Inside podcast, McCurdy chatted with fellow actor Karan Brar — known for his role on Disney Channel’s Jessie — to discuss their respective experiences as child stars.

During the discussion, Brar expressed how much he appreciates developing connections with his fellow castmates. This prompted McCurdy to recall her time working with her iCarly co-stars.

“It’s sort of like a family, and you also have peers that you can connect with at some level,” she shared. “Even though you’re all kids trying to be adults, you can still, in that regard, try to connect with one another.”

Jennette McCurdy made great connections on the ‘iCarly’ set

McCurdy, who is best known for playing Sam Puckett on the hit Nickelodeon sitcom, shared that she acted in very adult-focused projects before landing her role on iCarly. Because of this, she wasn’t able to make connections with people her own age.

“The breadth of my resume—before getting a part on Zoey 101, when then the producer knew me for iCarly and the shows I did after that—I did mostly heavy dramas,” she explained. “A child prostitute, I played, or like the rape victim, or all these really intense, heavy roles where I’d have to cry on cue and do all that spiel.”

Luckily for the Beyond star, things changed when she met her iCarly co-stars Miranda Cosgrove, Nathan Kress, and Jerry Trainor, whom she admits to building close relationships with during her time on the show.

“I had great friends in Miranda and Nathan, and even Jerry, who was a bit older than us but was wonderful in trying to cultivate that kind of, to your point, the younger environment,” McCurdy shared. “It was better in that aspect—having some friends my age was helpful and healthy. Yeah, I think that’s how I feel.”

Is Jennette McCurdy still friends with the ‘iCarly’ cast?

Though McCurdy didn’t divulge into where her relationship with her iCarly castmates stands today, Cosgrove previously revealed that she and her on-screen BFF remained friends years after their show ended in 2012.

“My best friend is Jennette McCurdy, who was on iCarly with me,” Cosgrove told the BUILD Series in 2017. “We live really close to each other. We have sleepovers all the time. Like, I literally see her every other day.”

She added, “With iCarly, it was so fun being best friends with Jennette and getting to travel all over. Getting to go through something like that with your best friend—it was really fun.”

In addition to being close with Cosgrove, McCurdy also remained friends with Nathan Kress, who played Freddie on the show.

In fact, in 2015, McCurdy, Cosgrove, and Trainor, attended Kress’ wedding. Three years later, Kress told Seventeen that he and his former co-stars try to reunite for dinner “roughly every year.”

Though McCurdy didn’t have the best experiences as a child actor, she did make fond memories while working on iCarly — and it’s all thanks to her fellow co-stars!
