Winslet has a number of incredible films under her belt — and it’s launched her to fame and fortune. But she didn’t grow up with wealth. Celebrity Net Worth notes Winslet’s parents were working class, and getting food on the table was a struggle.

As for how her acting career started, she got her first taste of success when she was just 11 years old. She started auditioning for commercial roles after being accepted into a theater school. And when she entered her teen years, she was cast in a British series called Dark Season. Finally, in 1994, she was cast in Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures. And her next big break was from Titanic, which director James Cameron was reluctant to cast her in.

Winslet later starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio once again in Revolutionary Road. And her HBO series, Mare of Easttown, is finally getting a release date.

All in all, Kate Winslet is worth $65 million and still getting plenty of work in 2021.

No other actor could’ve played Rose better than Winslet. So, how much did she earn for playing the lead? According to The Things, she earned around $2 million for the award-winning film.

It wasn’t an easy road to secure the role, though. Winslet shared with Rolling Stone the difficulties she faced, according to Cosmopolitan. And her passion for the film began way prior to filming. “I closed the script, wept floods of tears, and said, ‘Right, I’ve absolutely got to be a part of this. No two ways about it,'” Winslet expressed.

After that, she got a hold of Cameron, the director, via phone. “[Cameron] was on the freeway, and he said, ‘I’m going somewhere.’ And I think he pulled over, and I said, ‘I just have to do this, and you are really mad if you don’t cast me,'” she added.

Thankfully, Cameron listened to Winslet despite her having less star power than the others who could’ve taken the role. “James took a risk in casting me,” she noted. “A lot of my contemporaries — Uma Thurman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Winona Ryder — were much more likely candidates. I got lucky.”

Is co-star Leonardo DiCaprio’s net worth higher?

DiCaprio is also known for his starring role opposite Winslet in Titanic. And it appears he made more money than her from the film. The Things reports he made an initial salary of $2.5 million from Titanic.

So, what is DiCaprio’s net worth? Celebrity Net Worth notes it stands at $260 million, which is much higher than Winslet’s.

As for how DiCaprio’s net worth is so much higher, he got a hefty early start to his career with the success of The Basketball Diaries. The publication notes he earned $1 million from the 1995 hit. Then, after the success of Titanic, he earned tens of millions for The Beach, The Gangs of New York, Catch Me If You Can, The Aviator, and The Departed, just to name a few.

DiCaprio and Winslet have an immense amount of respect for each other, too. And they remain close friends to this day. “We needed each other to lean on because we were very young and working all kinds of crazy bloody hours, and it was a shock to the system,” Winslet explains of their friendship that started with Titanic.
