Much like Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker received a pretty polarized reception. Some fans felt the movie was little more than a retcon of the previous film in the franchise. Others appreciated the way the film hearkens back to earlier films in the series.

A Rise of Skywalker spinoff is on its way. Fans of The Rise of Skywalker have reason to rejoice. So do people who disliked the film. Here’s the planet from The Rise of Skywalker which is getting its own spinoff movie.

Palpatine’s planet lair getting spinoff movie

The Rise of Skywalker marks the return of Emperor Palpatine to the series. Palpatine is a Sith lord, the Sith lords being the Jedi’s evil equivalents. Palpatine previously appeared to have died in Return of the Jedi, but a revived Palpatine is The Rise of Skywalker’s primary antagonist. He is the Star Wars character who’s the closest to being a classic Gothic horror villain a la Count Dracula or the Phantom of the Opera.

It only fits that Palpatine’s lair is very Gothic. He lives on the planet Exegol, a dark, spooky planet populated by the ghosts of past Sith lords. Although The Rise of Skywalker was a polarizing movie, many fans seemed to enjoy the aesthetic of the planet Exegol and wanted to learn more about it. Even the film’s detractors liked Exegol.

According to Deadline, a new Star Wars film set on Exegol is on the way. The film is being developed by J.D. Dillard and Matt Owens. Dillard is most known for directing the critically acclaimed monster movie Sweetheart. Owens has penned episodes of the popular superhero series Luke Cage and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It’s currently unknown whether this film will get released to theaters or the streaming service Disney+. The project is still in development.

Right now, fans can only speculate about the film’s story. Exegeol is described as a Sith planet in The Rise of Skywalker. Does this mean Emperor Palpatine will play a role in the story? Will other Sith Lords appear in the film?

Many of the most famous villains in Star Wars history are Sith Lords, including Darth Vader, Darth Maul, and Count Dooku. There is always a chance Disney will decide to bring back one or more of these iconic villains for a new movie. After all, the studio already brought back Emperor Palpatine for The Rise of Skywalker and Darth Vader for a secondary role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. There’s also a chance Disney might take a chance and introduce a new Sith lord to the series.

According to IGN, the location of Exegol is kept secret. There’s a good chance this secrecy could play a role in the upcoming film. Exegol could certainly inspire an interesting plotline.
