Netflix is known for its extensive library of original and licensed content. Truly, the streaming service keeps subscribers busy with a regular helping of new movies and TV series. But few Netflix series have resonated with mainstream audience in the way Stranger Things has.

Matt and Ross Duffer created the series for the streaming service in 2016. And Stranger Things instantly became a hit, making its mark in pop culture. Characters like Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Jim Harbour (Jim Hopper) became fan favorites. And suddenly Stranger Things was everywhere.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 3 broke Netflix records

One key reason Stranger Things has become such a hit is its focus on 1980s nostalgia. Season 1 is set in 1983, and each subsequent batch of episodes jumps ahead roughly another year. The developing story centered on the alternate dimension known as the Upside Down has made the show one of the most popular binge-watching shows today.

In fact, Stranger Things Season 3 was such an event for fans that it shattered Netflix records. Within four days, more than 40 million Netflix subscribers had streamed the show. Perhaps even more remarkably, over 18 million had already finished all eight episodes.

Given how beloved its characters have become, it makes sense why fans would run through Stranger Things 3 so quickly. But we’re betting the season finale has fans even more ready to see what their favorite characters take on next.

Finn Wolfhard shares when season 4 begins filming

Finn Wolfhard — who plays Mike Wheeler on the show — has always been one of the most prominent cast members. While the young actor stars in films like The Turning and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, he’s still best known for Stranger Things. Now, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he’s provided an update on season 4.

We start really soon — in a month or two. We just got some of the scripts, which I haven’t read yet. Up until a few days ago, we really had no idea what was going on this season. … The Duffers are so elusive with it. It’s calculated. They calculate the time of when to give us the scripts because they also write the show as we shoot. So it’s all kind of up in the air. But, yeah, we’re gearing up to go, and I’m really excited for it. It’s a really crazy season.

According to Wolfhard, filming on Stranger Things 4 sounds like it will kick off sometime in the first quarter of 2020. We have to admit the Duffers’ “elusive” approach to each season is probably a smart way to avoid spoilers leaking out too far ahead of time. As we alluded to, season 3 ended with a shock. So fans and journalists are probably extra eager for scoops on how that plays out.

When will ‘Stranger Things 4’ be released?

As far as the release date of Stranger Things 4, Netflix has not revealed any details just yet. We have no idea what the plot of the show will center on nor when it hit will the streaming service. With their young cast growing up fast, we imagine the Duffers want to move as quickly as possible. They’ve previously said Stranger Things would probably end after four or five seasons.

So will Stranger Things 4 be the end of the series? Perhaps. For now, fans are waiting with bated breath to find out what kind of crazy mystery our heroes get wrapped up in. The seasons tend to be released at least a year apart. With season 3 out in July 2019, the earliest we expect season 4 — given its production start — is late 2020. But early or mid-2021 feels more likely. Strap in for a long wait, Stranger Things fans.
