What is ‘Mad Men’ about?

Mad Men premiered on television in 2007, debuting on the AMC network and telling the story of advertising executive Don Draper and his steady climb up the ladder of success. Initially, Draper is the creative director at Sterling Cooper, but after proving himself (and double-crossing several of his associates), Draper goes on to become a founding partner at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce advertising firm.

While Draper is the central character, there are a lot of other interesting characters who make an impression. Peggy Olson, played by Elisabeth Moss, is one character that really resonated with fans. Peggy gives the series a woman’s perspective, highlighting how women were treated in the ’60s corporate culture. From Draper’s family to his work associates, the show’s ensemble cast of characters helped to cement Mad Men as one of the highest-rated productions on television.

The series was a critical darling

Critics not only praised Mad Men for the acting and writing but for the production design and visual styling as well. Showrunners took inspiration from many classic film directors, including Alfred Hitchcock, perfectly capturing the highly stylized world of the ’60s. Ultimately, everyone’s dedication to creating a stunning series paid off, and the series was honored with a slew of awards and nominations.

Over the years, the show received 16 Emmy Awards, including winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series four times, and five Golden Globe Awards. More than the awards that it won, however, Mad Men was lauded by viewers as being one of the greatest television shows ever to air on basic cable — and the legacy that it left behind when it went off the air in 2015 remains strong to this day, with new fans discovering the show on a daily basis, and established fans uncovering even more to love in the groundbreaking series.
