Kate and Prince William met innocently enough. The two first crossed paths at the prestigious University of Saint Andrews in 2001.

They met through mutual friends and even though reports say that Middleton was somewhat starstruck when she first met Prince William, they became fast friends. The early days of their relationship were innocent enough, with the two of them sharing a mutual interest in sports and athletic activities.

Reportedly, at the time of their first meeting, both Prince William and Kate were dating other people. Kate was involved with a medical student a few years older than she was, while Prince William was dating another fellow student.

Still, the seeds of romance were planted in those early days — it would just take some time for them to blossom. By the time Kate signed up to participate in a school charity fashion show, around a year after their initial meeting, both she and Prince William were once again single.

Kate Middleton captured Prince William’s attention in a sheer dress

In 2002, Kate volunteered to wear a sheer dress and walk the runway for a charity fashion show. The dress, which featured a black bikini underneath the mesh-style see-through garment, was created for an assignment titled “The Art of Seduction.”

It seems as though the dress did the trick – once Prince William saw Kate on the runway in the dress, he reportedly began thinking of her in a romantic way, and they began dating not long after the fashion show.

Recently, the designer who created the sheer dress opened up, admitting that it was pure coincidence that Kate happened to wear the dress that she designed. She said: “I didn’t know who Kate Middleton was and I didn’t put her in it. It was just pure chance!”

Still, the designer, Charlotte Todd, is happy to be part of royal history: “I’m thrilled. Everyone says that the fashion show was when the romance started, so a small part of me will always be part of royal history. It’s madness!”

Over the years, Kate and Prince William have welcomed three children and weathered scores of major life events. Through it all, they have remained each other’s strongest support system.

These days, Prince William and Kate are busier than ever, as they prepare for even greater responsibility in the days ahead.
