Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore seemed like the perfect Hollywood couple. But once Moore’s memoir hit the book stands, everyone could see that their seemingly happy marriage was just a facade.

The St. Elmo’s Fire actor spills all of their darkest marital secrets in her new book, Inside Out. And one of the most tumultuous events from their marriage involved an incident on her birthday that left Kutcher “furious.”

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore were ‘soulmates’

Before the problems started to arise in their relationship, Moore says she considered Kutcher to be her “soulmate.” She recalls the night they met at one of his parties.

According to Moore, it was as if no one else was in the room but them. They stayed up talking until sunrise and ended up falling asleep next to each other. Moore was so connected to Kutcher at one point that she considered him to be her “soulmate” as well as “the love of her life.”

In her memoir, Moore says Kutcher would leave little notes around the house for her, which said things like: “Don’t forget you are magical,” and “I believe in you.” During this phase of the relationship, Moore felt like “the luckiest person in the world.”

Alcoholism and a lack of support destroyed their relationship

Yet sadly, their relationship went south once alcohol was involved. As Moore reveals in her memoir, she has been battling an addiction to alcohol for years. Yet upon meeting Kutcher, she was sober for nearly two decades.

Moore alleges that her then-lover pushed her to drink because he didn’t believe “alcoholism was real.” To impress her husband, she tried to prove that she was “normal” by having a drink every so often. Unfortunately, once she started, she was unable to stop drinking.

Things only got worse on her 45th birthday. There was a lot of alcohol involved at the party, and the Ghost actor ended up taking too many tequila shots. (Moore adds that during her birthday, people were getting “plastered” and dancing on tables in their underwear.)

“But when you don’t have an off switch,” she says in her book, “you go until you can’t go anymore.”

She adds,

“Late that night, we all ended up in the hot tub. I started passing out and slipping under the water. If other people hadn’t been there, I would have drowned. Ashton carried me back to our bed, and he was furious. To some extent, I understand his reaction. If this had been the first time something like this had happened, that would have been one thing, but it wasn’t.”

Demi Moore says Ashton Kutcher would shame her for drinking

According to Moore, she was also confused by his “furious” reaction. She wondered why he was mad when he was the one who pushed her to drink in the first place.

“Ashton had encouraged me to go in this direction,” she says. “When I went too far, though, he let me know how he felt by showing me a picture he’d taken of me resting my head on the toilet the night before. It seemed like a good-natured joke at the time. But it was really just shaming.”
