We’ve been watching Theresa Caputo contact the dead for years — and along the way, her fans have gotten to know her pretty well, too. Known for her signature big hair, long nails, and Long Island accent, the Long Island Medium has long talked about her special gift of speaking with spirit. And through her TLC series, viewers have seen Theresa in action, as she frequently approaches random folks on the street when spirit calls out to her. She also has scheduled readings with others, and we’ve seen her reduce her clients to tears after speaking with their deceased loved ones.

Not everyone’s a fan of Theresa, however. It seems Bravo’s Andy Cohen has criticized her abilities in the past. Here’s why.

Andy Cohen accused Theresa of ‘fishing’ during his reading

Back in Long Island Medium’s heyday, it seemed like Theresa was everywhere — and she even made appearances on Andy Cohen’s show, Watch What Happens Live. Radar Online reports Theresa was a guest on the program in 2014, and after the filming for the show was over, Andy asked her for a private reading just for him. His friend, Natasha Richardson, had died in a skiing accident back in 2009, and Andy was hoping to contact her. The reading did not go as planned, however.

The publication notes in his book, The Andy Cohen Diaries: A Deep Look at a Shallow Year, he wrote, “I asked for a few minutes with her afterwards to see if Natasha would come through.” Unfortunately, he added, “She didn’t, so it was a lot of fishing.” He also noted that Theresa offered to give him another reading, but he declined. “Theresa Caputo’s manager … said she feels terrible that she didn’t give me a good reading and wants to do it over, a polite offer that I refused.”

Theresa has always maintained her authenticity as a medium

Andy may have had a poor experience with Theresa, but the medium has always maintained that she is truly gifted. On her website, she explained, “I’ve been seeing, feeling, and sensing Spirit since I was four years old, but it wasn’t until I was in my 20s that I learned to communicate with souls in Heaven.” Theresa then went on to explain that a spiritual healer helped her understand her gift — and she hasn’t looked back since. “When I accepted my gift, I decided to use it to deliver healing messages that would help people learn, grow, and embrace life,” she added.

Today, in addition to her TV show, you can get a private reading with Theresa, read her books, or see her on tour. Not everyone who’s seen her has been impressed, however. Some skeptics have even suggested Theresa is a lot more cunning than she lets on, as they believe she relies on classic medium tricks to convince others she’s psychic.

She’s been denounced by multiple celebrities

Andy Cohen isn’t the first celebrity to speak out against Theresa. Radar Online reports Howard Stern contacted Theresa and asked her to appear on his radio show back in 2013. Unfortunately, he was immediately put off by her unreasonable and diva-like demands. The radio host also added, “She’s never coming in here … It’s never going to happen. The Long Island psychic is not a psychic.”

Anderson Cooper was another talk show host who didn’t necessarily believe in Theresa’s abilities. She went on to his show back in 2012, but he claimed he wasn’t too impressed by her abilities. “There’s a lot you can say to a room of 300 people. … Somebody here has ashes of a loved one, there’s a pretty good chance somebody has a piece of jewelry with some ashes in it. People so want to believe in things … but I want to see actual proof,” he said.
