Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have been best friends for decades. They became incredibly close after filming James Cameron’s cinematic masterpiece, Titanic, in 1997. And although they never dated, their friendship remains one of the purest relationships in Hollywood.

But despite their unabiding love for one another, Winslet couldn’t stand kissing her BFF in Revolutionary Road. Keep reading to find out why.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have experience with making out

DiCaprio and Winslet are practically used to locking lips after starring in Titanic. Yet despite the love that Jack and Rose have for each other, Winslet and DiCaprio are a lot less fond of their kissing scenes than one might suspect.

Although DiCaprio said that Winslet was his favorite on-screen kissing partner of all time, Winslet quickly debunked his statement.

“I can tell you right now he hated it,” she revealed about their on-screen kiss. Winslet continued, saying DiCaprio “complained bitterly” anytime the scene called for a smooch.

As a defense, DiCaprio said the only reason he complained was that their kissing scenes always ruined their makeup.

But as annoying as their cosmetic dilemmas were, their kissing scenes in Titanic weren’t nearly as bad as they were in their next film, Revolutionary Road.

Although they’ve kissed plenty of times before in acting scenes, Winslet had an especially difficult time locking lips with DiCaprio in Revolutionary Road.

According to Nicki Swift, she “couldn’t stand” her kissing scenes with DiCaprio because of how awkward it was. Why? Because her husband at the time, Sam Mendes, was the director of the film. This made her incredibly uncomfortable. Winslet was shocked and hurt by how little Mendes seemed to care about the fact that someone else was kissing her.

“I just kept saying, ‘This is too weird,'” she said, according to Marie Claire. “Leo told me to get over it, but I said, ‘You’re my best friend, and he’s my husband. This is definitely a bit weird.'”

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet Still Quote ‘Titanic’ Together

Although several factors ultimately led to Winslet’s divorce with her husband, The Daily Mail reports that one of the main factors was Revolutionary Road

“It was certainly a difficult time,” DiCaprio told The Daily Mail. “She was really worried that Sam wasn’t bothered by the fact that his wife was making out with another guy right in front of her. I told her it was only acting, but she kept on saying, ‘This is really weird.'”

“When Sam started telling her exactly how to have sex with me, she didn’t like it at all,” DiCaprio continued. “She was freaking out because she was supposed to be having sex with her best friend – me – while her husband directed.”

Not long after filming the movie, Winslet and Mendes divorced.
