‘Call Me Kat’ is Mayim Bialik and Jim Parsons’ latest project

Parsons and Bialik worked on The Big Bang Theory together for nearly a decade. They portrayed physics genius Sheldon Cooper and his neurobiologist girlfriend/wife Amy Farrah Fowler.  After The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019, the two teamed up to bring the British comedy Miranda to American television with their FOX sitcom, Call Me Kat.

The show features Bialik as Kat, a single woman who owns a cat cafe owner in Louisville, Kentucky. Leslie Jordan, Cheyenne Jackson, Kyla Pratt, Swoosie Kurtz, and Julian Gant also star in supporting roles. Call Me Kat premiered on Jan. 3, 2021, with new episodes airing weekly, Thursday nights on FOX.

They are producing the show together

Before The Big Bang Theory, Bialik was a child actor who appeared on the NBC sitcom Blossom. She’s been in the industry for over 30 years, and alongside Parsons, she is utilizing her production experience with Call Me Kat

“I’ve never been a producer before,” Bialik said during a webinar to raise money for The Groundlings. “This is my first time producing anything, and Jim Parsons, who was Sheldon on Big Bang Theory, we were producing together. Our companies worked together, but this audition process was a lot of me and Jim texting each other.”

Mayim Bialik says she’s ‘immensely grateful’ to Jim Parsons

In a recent video on her Youtube channel, Bialik talked about how she worked with Parsons to bring Call Me Kat to TV. She noted that the show is being produced under Parsons’ new banner.

“The reason that Call Me Kat exists is because Jim Parsons, who played Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory, his production company, That’s Wonderful Productions, got the rights to Miranda which was a very popular BBC series in the UK for three years,” Bialik explained. “[It’s] about a very unusual woman, and we absolutely made the decision to adapt that story into an American version with me as the main character.”

Noting it’s not always easy to get a character like Kat on TV, Bialik said she was grateful to Parsons for helping her tell this story. “I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Bialik said. “I’m immensely grateful to Jim Parsons for this opportunity and for trusting me to try and carry this show about a woman who doesn’t have it all and is still happy with her life.”
