When people hear someone mention The Nanny, they remember that sassy woman from Flushing, Queens, and an iconic nasally voice. For several years, audiences everywhere were glued to their TV screens to witness Fran succeeding at being an atypical nanny.

Not only can fans watch old episodes online, but they also will get to see a revival of the series. The revival will come in the form of a Broadway musical. While people are happy to see a renewed interest, some may wonder why the original show ended in the first place.

The Nanny is a ’90s sitcom that ran for six seasons before ending in 1999. The main cast included Fran Drescher, Daniel Davis, and Charles Shaughnessy. Drescher played the central character, whose name is Fran as well. The show starts with the protagonist trying to sell cosmetics.

Set in New York City, Fran becomes the nanny of three children. The father is a widower named Maxwell Sheffield, and he is a Broadway producer. Fran and Maxwell become attracted to one another, and they tease the viewers with their closeness. Eventually, the two get married and have twins.

Fran and Maxwell are not the only ones to become a couple. Working for the family is a witty butler named Niles. He often throws jabs as Maxwell’s business partner, C.C. Babcock. Much to the surprise of fans, the two end up together.

The viewers never bought into their romance, and neither did the actor for Niles. Still, fans enjoyed seeing the relationships between every character develop.

Even though The Nanny finished airing over 20 years ago, many people still recall some of their favorite moments. The love people still have for the series shows how popular it was. At the time, The Nanny became one of the highest-rated sitcoms.

Not only did the average viewer enjoy the show, but so did critics. The Nanny received numerous award nominations and won a few of them. People were no doubt sad to see the series end on its sixth season.

After the show concluded, fans could still watch reruns of the episodes. For several years, the series appeared on Nick at Nite. Eventually, The Nanny got pulled from the network’s time slots. Now, the classic sitcom is back for fans to binge-watch.

On April 1, the show became available to watch on the streaming platform HBO Max. Drescher had reminded her followers of the news on Instagram. Now people can get comfortable in their living rooms and relive the experience.

Where Is the Cast of ‘The Nanny’ Today?

The Nanny had a rocky start at first before becoming a massive hit. The series managed to survive its first season, and fans were glad it did. While it did not get canceled before it had the chance to succeed, the network ended up pulling the plug after six seasons.

Some fans may have a hard time believing that such a popular show would get axed. According to Inquisitr, it was the romance between Fran and Maxwell that brought an end to The Nanny. One of the dynamics that attracted viewers was the never-ending sexual tension between the two characters.

The chemistry resonated with audiences, but the writers decided to change it. While fans rooted for Fran and Maxwell, seeing it happen in canon led to the premise fizzling out. Drescher stated in an interview that she tried to talk the writers out of it but to no avail.

“When a show is built around a love that can’t happen, sexual tension, you have to keep it that way,” Drescher explained.
