One of the best crime dramas around is Broadchurch. People can see the point of view of the detectives and the grieving family. Fans were left with suspense as the characters tried to find the person behind the attack.

The TV show did not air as long as others. It contained a few series before the creators decided to put an end to Broadchurch. While the lack of new episodes is disheartening, they had a reason for the cancellation.

‘Broadchurch’ starts off with a dead body

Broadchurch is a British crime drama that aired from 2013 to 2017. The show ran for three series and had a total of 24 episodes. Some of the stars include David Tennant, Olivia Coleman, and Jodie Whittaker. The show was a success, and millions of people tuned in to watch it.

The first series centers around the death of an 11-year-old boy in the close-knit town of Broadchurch. The boy’s name is Danny, and a murder investigation arises when the authorities find his body. The series focuses on how suspicion and media attention affects a small town.

In the second series, the plot continues the criminal investigation of the previous series. Viewers watch Latimer’s family struggle during Joe Miller’s trial. While Joe does not get found guilty, some of the town’s residents order him to leave.

Many people were captivated by the story and the deviation in the usual procedural protocol of most crime dramas. People got to see the crime from different perspectives. Not to mentioned, they saw their favorite actors as work.

The reason why the network canceled ‘Broadchurch’

Despite Broadchurch being popular among viewers, the show got canceled. Some people were surprised to learn that the unique crime drama would not be returning for another series. Networks tend to cancel shows due to ratings, but Broadchurch performed very well.

According to Entertainment Daily, ITV wanted Broadchurch to be a standalone show in the beginning. However, they soon extended it to three series instead after the drama’s success. The cancellation happened because of a “plausibility issue.” Even Tennant thought it would not make sense to continue the British series.

“It’s a small town in the west of England, there just wouldn’t be that many appalling events going on there. After a certain point you’ve got to accept that that would stretch credibility,” Tennant stated.

The writer of Broadchurch mentioned that he had no plans for another set of episodes. Also, Tennant explained that spinoff show is not going to happen. While fans will not get to see him and Coleman together again, they still have the three seasons.

The storyline of Danny’s murder spans the first two series. However, the last one handles a different type of case. The events take place three years after Danny’s death, and Tennant and Coleman’s characters return to solve the mystery.

A resident named Trish reports that someone sexually assaulted her after a party. She could not see who attacked her since the perpetrator had hit her on the head. Alec and his partner Ellie determine that the criminal planned the attack and may hurt someone else.

Broadchurch ends when Michael confesses to the assault and reveals that Leo forced him to do it. Later, Leo arrogantly confesses that he attacked other women as well. Viewers see Alec and Ellie reflect on the case, and Paul gives one last sermon before leaving the town.

Currently, people can see Broadchurch on Netflix. All three series are available to stream, so fans can rewatch when the feeling strikes.
