Will Smith’s mom, Carolyn Bright, is an important figure in his life. Smith talks about the trauma of witnessing his father abuse her, and how she supported his career, even if she didn’t quite understand his rap music at first. One time when he was a teenager, Smith admits, his mother caught him in a compromising position.

Smith wrote about his childhood in his autobiography, Will. In one story, he was not as sneaky as he thought he was with his high school girlfriend, Melanie Parker

When Smith was 16, he fell in love with Parker. Parker had a complicated family life and was removed from her mother’s custody. Smith convinced his parents to let Parker stay with them and promised they wouldn’t have sex. He thought he meant it, too.

“I’m still not exactly sure why I did what I did that night,” he wrote. “To this day, I have no idea what I was thinking. Of all the experiences I am sharing in this book, this is the individual moment of personal behavior that makes the least sense to me.”

Before coming clean with his embarrassing story, Smith stated for the record that his intentions were pure.

“I would like to preface my remarks by making it unequivocally clear that I was deeply and totally in love with Melanie Parker,” he wrote. “We were going to be married; we were going to have four beautiful mochaccino-flavored children: and our union would live alongside the epic tales of romance: Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Iseult, Tupac and Janet, even Eddie and Halle in Boomerang.”

Smith and Parker hadn’t even been dating for three months when they consummated their relationship. Smith thought they were in the clear.

“But at 4:00 a.m., less than three months into our star-crossed love affair, Mom-Mom should have been asleep but tragically decided she wanted a cup of coffee,” he wrote. “And wearing slippers far too quiet to defend her delicate sensibilities, she approached the threshold of the family kitchen. Still innocent, she flipped the light switch as she had done tens of thousands of times before.”

Will Smith’s mother saw something she never wanted to see

Smith described the scene his mother witnessed as politely as he could. It’s still graphic, but not explicit.

“But this time, her eyes landed upon her eldest son and his girlfriend deep in the throes of reckless lovemaking,” he wrote. “As a teenager, outside of physical injury, you cannot feel worse than having your mother catch you and your girlfriend doggy-style on her kitchen floor.”

Smith then described his mother’s reaction, “‘OH, WILLARD!’ Mom-Mom growled, slapping the lights off. Stomping furiously up the stairs, the slamming of her bedroom door functioned as a disastrous exclamation point.”

By this time, Parker’s mother resolved her issues and she could move back home.
