With the Fox/Disney merger now behind us, it’s only a matter of time until the MCU pulls the Merc with a Mouth into its madness. How and when Deadpool will join the existing Avengers — coming to contribute to the ever-expanding filmic landscape — remains unknown. However, some theories suggest he could appear as early as Black Widow in a post-credits scene. Deadpool boasts an odd, will-they-won’t-they, sort of one-way romance with the character in the comics, so a Black Widow appearance does have a foundation in the source material.

Only one problem remains: one of the pivotal castmembers in the Deadpool franchise already belongs to the MCU, and is he the face behind the greatest threat to ever challenge the Avengers.

Josh Brolin portrayed Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, yet he also plays Cable in Deadpool. If the MCU wants to keep Cable around, will they allow Josh Brolin to reprise the character, or will recasting follow suit to avoid any confusion? While Josh Brolin may be unrecognizable as Thanos, he has been present for various Avengers-oriented press junkets and has a recognizable voice that would be hard to detach from the character, so what’s the plan?

Josh Brolin is reportedly in talks to return to ‘Deadpool 3’

When Deadpool 3 graces fans spanning the globe, it will fall under the Disney umbrella; meaning, it will officially be a part of the MCU. Thus, Kevin Feige and Co. may undo some of Deadpool’s Fox history to work within the MCU’s narrative continuity and mesh with the grand plan. Yet, that doesn’t mean they will remove Brolin from the franchise.

According to We Got This Covered (WGTC), Josh Brolin is in talks to return to cable in Deadpool 3. The outlet revealed — relying on the same sources who knew the film was in development months before such was confirmed — that Brolin will reprise the character, as he has proved consequential to the movie’s winning formula.

From the jokes about Logan to his general wise-cracking on-screen presence, the character fits well in the Deadpool franchise, and be brings a needed degree of unpredictability and freshness to the cinematic take. Cable fits with the movie’s R-rating and he is an important ingredient when considering the film’s factors for success.

If Josh Brolin plays Cable again, is Thanos’ return in the MCU out of the question?

Multiple “insider leaks” have suggested that Thanos will return to the Avengers landscape as part of or following The Eternals, considering his story is intimately connected to that of the humanoid race. Yet, if Brolin returns as Cable, the MCU may avoid a Thanos reprisal, as to keep the actor within one narrative realm.

Seeing one actor play two pivotal roles in the MCU will not only lead to confusion but will likely catalyze a separation between screen and audience. Such inconsistencies tend to bring people out of the movie, as they become focused on the behind-the-scenes situation that gave rise to the on-screen predicament. If Josh Brolin returns as Cable, a Thanos reprisal virtually seems out of the question, but all remains to be seen.
