Ever since the explosive season 3 finale of Yellowstone aired last August, fans have wondered who made it out alive. At first, most were worried about Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce Dutton’s (Luke Grimes) chances for survival.

But thanks to a recent interview with Kevin Costner, the focus has shifted to the fate of the Dutton family patriarch, John Dutton. Should fans be fearful that John Dutton didn’t make it out of season 3 alive? According to Costner’s latest Instagram post, the answer is “no.”

The ‘Yellowstone’ star will not comment on John Dutton’s fate

In the final moments of the season 3 finale, Beth and Kayce were in their offices when they came under attack. A bomb went off in Beth’s office after her assistant opened a package. At the same time, Kayce was under his desk hiding from masked gunmen who stormed into his office.

John was on the side of the road helping a woman change a tire. That’s when a van pulled up and an unknown assailant shot John and left him for dead. It doesn’t seem likely that all three characters would be killed off. But, most fans were worried that at least one Dutton was in trouble.

During a recent interview with Good Day New York, Costner said he couldn’t talk about the fate of his character. But then he made a comment that really had fans worried.

“I can’t say,” Costner said about whether or not John survives. “There’s an ending that you’re gonna see, hopefully it’s a powerful one for you.”

The Oscar winner went on to explain that he likes to “make things and be a part of things that have a dramatic arc to them.” He also advised Yellowstone fans to “just try to enjoy it right up to the end if you can.”

Kevin Costner admitted that shooting season 4 would be difficult

After Costner made that comment, the internet went crazy with speculation that he was leaving Yellowstone. This was not long after Gossip Cop had debunked the rumor that Costner quit the show because he wasn’t happy about moving his family to Montana to shoot in the production bubble.

Costner’s spokesperson said that the Yellowstone star and executive producer is “very proud” of the Paramount Network western.  The spokesperson added that there was no truth to the rumor that Costner had quit. Much less that he had to uproot his family.

The Bodyguard star shared a pic on Instagram back in October that confirmed he was in Montana and filming season 4.

“It’s hard to beat Montana in October. Easy to see why everyone wants a piece of #Yellowstone ranch!” Costner wrote.

He did admit that shooting season 4 would be difficult because he would be away from home almost the entire time.

“It puts me away from home. I go home every moment I can,” he told Good Housekeeping. “But this year, we’re filming exclusively in Montana, which makes going home almost impossible.”

Kevin Costner pretty much confirmed his character survived the ‘Yellowstone’ season 3 finale

Costner, Reilly, and Grimes have all been pretty tight-lipped about their character’s fates. But none of them have been shy about being in Montana during production of season 4. Reilly even went so far as to confirm that all episodes have been shot.

“Yeah, the end of season three is a big cliffhanger,” Reilly told Screen Rant. “I’m not allowed to really say too much about whether or not I’m part of season four. In fact, I’m not allowed to say anything. But what I can say is that season four has been shot, and that it’s wonderful what happens.”

Costner has also made it clear that he will be part of season 4 in some capacity, so fans shouldn’t be too worried. Unless he’s in Montana shooting flashback scenes, it’s pretty obvious that John Dutton survives. But then again, he could be just teasing fans in order to keep the big reveal a secret.

In his latest Instagram post, Costner shared another pic from Big Sky country. In the caption, he wrote, “Who’s ready to get back to the ranch?”

Yellowstone season 4 is expected to premiere this June on the Paramount Network. To catch up with the series, the first three seasons are available on Peacock.
