Yellowstone season 4 premieres this fall, and the promotional push from the Paramount Network is officially underway. The cable outlet has dropped a few short teasers and a trailer. They’ve also given fans a behind-the-scenes look at season 4 with a three-and-a-half-minute video that features interviews with the cast.

In all of this promotional material, there’s been one common theme. Yellowstone really wants fans to believe that at least one member of the Dutton family is not returning in season 4.

‘Yellowstone’ dropped the first season 4 teaser in July

Since the first three seasons of Yellowstone each premiered in June, fans were expecting a season 4 premiere this past summer. But that didn’t happen. Instead, the Paramount Network waited until early July to drop the first season 4 teaser. And it revealed that the highly-anticipated season wouldn’t begin until the fall.

The teaser began with a montage of the first three seasons. Then, it showed the explosive final moments of the season 3 finale that saw John (Kevin Costner), Beth (Kelly Reilly), and Kayce (Luke Grimes) Dutton fighting for their lives.

The teaser then told fans “Revenge will be worth the wait” before showing the first images of season 4. Rip (Cole Hauser) runs to John lying on the side of the road and says, “John don’t you die on me now. Not like this, you hear me!”

The theme is revenge

As the summer continued, Yellowstone occasionally posted short teasers with the theme of “revenge.” One featured a crow flying around in a gray, ominous sky. Another showed a white cowboy hat floating down the river as blood started to flow into the water.

A third featured a pack of stampeding horses, with one dragging someone who is tied with a long piece of rope. They are bouncing along the ground before the final shot of the promo shows a lonely cowboy hat in the dirt. Finally, the teaser promises, “Every. Body. Pays.”

The behind-the-scenes feature included interviews with multiple stars from Yellowstone, plus creator Taylor Sheridan.  But, there were some members of the cast who were noticeably missing.

‘Yellowstone’ really wants fans to believe that at least one Dutton isn’t coming back for season 4

All of the season 4 promos and sneak peeks have one common theme — Yellowstone really wants fans to believe that at least one member of the Dutton family is not coming back for season 4.

One common thread is that all of the new footage from the upcoming season has left out Beth and Kayce. And, the only shot of John is when Rip is running to him as he lays bleeding on the side of the road.

The only footage we see of John, Beth, or Kayce in the season 4 promos is from the season 3 finale or earlier.

Another hint of this theme came in the behind-the-scenes look at season 4, which featured interviews with a number of cast members. Everyone from Wes Bentley (Jamie Dutton) to Kelsey Asbille (Monica Long Dutton) to Jennifer Landon (Skeeter).

Who was missing from this video? The answer is Costner, Reilly, and Grimes. Not one of the actors appeared in the sneak peek to share their thoughts about the upcoming season.

The Dutton actors are not giving interviews

Costner, Reilly, and Grimes were not part of the promo interviews, and none of them have been talking to the media, either. So far, none of the series’ stars have appeared on any talk shows to promote season 4. No one’s given magazine interviews, or said much of anything on social media.

When Yellowstone dropped their trailer, Reilly shared it on Instagram and wrote, ” Season 4…Best one yet, apparently.” In his post, Costner wrote, “I don’t know if you’re ready for this one. #everybodypays.” Meanwhile, Grimes doesn’t appear to have any social media accounts.

‘Yellowstone’ star Cole Hauser says fans will be ‘happily surprised’ with season 4

One Yellowstone star who has given a few interviews since the season 3 finale last year is Hauser. This past spring, he told Kathryn Hall during a conversation for the HALL Wines YouTube channel that Yellowstone fans will be “happily surprised” with season 4.”

The one Dutton who is talking is Bentley’s Jamie. In the Yellowstone behind-the-scenes video, Bentley described the season 4 premiere as “spectacular.”
