Kevin Costner will star in, produce, and direct ‘Horizon’

Costner is known for appearing in and producing some of the most memorable movies of all time. He made his directorial debut in 1990 with the epic western, Dances With Wolves. The film received seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and a Best Director win for Costner.

His second feature, The Postman, did not do as well critically or commercially. But his third, Open Range (also a western), was a box office hit that earned favorable reviews.

Now, nearly 20 years later, Costner is getting behind the camera once again. As reported by Deadline, he will star in, produce, and direct his passion project, Horizon. The 67-year-old co-wrote the script with Scottish filmmaker Jon Baird.

Horizon comes from Warner Bros Pictures, New Line, and Costner’s Territory Pictures. In a statement, Warner Bros Group chairman Toby Emmerich revealed how excited the studio is to partner with Costner on his next directorial project.

“Kevin’s ambitious vision for this story is the perfect crystallization of his affinity for the American West and passion to bring this turning point in its history to life with all the human drama, cultural complexity, and immense scope that it merits,” Emmerich said.

Costner announced the film in January. In a tweet, he suggested his directorial comeback “has been a long time coming” and that he “couldn’t be more excited to share this project with the world.”

What is ‘Horizon’ about?

Horizon is an epic set in the American West. The story spans 15 years, starting just before the Civil War expansion. According to Costner, the film is a multifaceted chronicle of the pivotal era.

“America’s expansion into the west was one that was fraught with peril and intrigue from the natural elements, to the interactions with the indigenous peoples who lived on the land, and the determination and at many times ruthlessness of those who sought to settle it,” he told Deadline.

Horizon tells the story of that journey in an honest and forthcoming way,” Costner added, “highlighting the points of view and consequences of the characters’ life and death decisions.”

‘Horizon’ will start filming in August 2022

Costner is currently busy with season 5 of his hit series, Yellowstone. The show will start shooting in May and continue through the summer until early August.

Shortly after Yellowstone Season 5 wraps, Costner will begin filming Horizon in Utah. The scheduled start date is August 29.

Casting for Horizon is currently ongoing. Announcements will likely be made before summer.

Along with Horizon, Costner also has a documentary project in the works. He is partnering with 44 Blue Productions to develop a new series titled Onward that will explore the cultures and traditions of Indigenous communities from all over the world.
