Zooey Deschanel fought hard to win the role of Jessica Day on New Girl. According to several sources, Deschanel’s lack of comedic experience concerned casting directors. They briefly considered a different actor before giving Deschanel a shot. It’s a good thing, too. Deschanel nailed the incredibly unique part. While she largely enjoyed her time on set, Deschanel has said that one thing about Jess frustrated her. She hates the one word most commonly used to describe not only Jess Day but Deschanel, too.

Jessica Day’s prevailing quality on New Girl was her quirkiness

New Girls premise wasn’t particularly inventive or unique. The series followed a middle school teacher after she moved into a loft with three men. Jess found herself in need of new housing after her partner cheated on her. Over time, Jess forms a bond with her roommates, Nick Miller, Winston Bishop, Schmidt, and Coach, and they become like family.

During its seven-season run, the show was popular mostly because of the hijinx that went down inside the California loft that the roommates shared. Conflicting personalities and sexual tension became hallmarks of the series, but fans point to Deschanel’s portrayal of Jess as one reason the series was so enjoyable. Jess was, for lack of a better word, quirky. Her clothes, her random outburst of singing, and naivety all made her an endearing character.

Zooey Deschanel has been described the same way

The way people viewed Jess spilled over into real life for Deschanel. While Jess’s personality was quirky to match her style, Deschanel is a bit less offbeat in real life. Still, her style matches that of her famed character. Deschanel largely chooses vintage-inspired outfits with bold colors and patterns. She has a preference for fit and flare skirts and peter pan collars.

In short, her style is unique and, well, quirky. Still, she manages to pull it off. Deschanel claims the secret to looking great is to like what you are wearing. According to Elite Daily, her goal is to pick clothing that makes her happy, even if it has people labeling her as a little strange.

Zooey Deschanel has said she hates the word for one big reason

Deschanel may have made a name for herself by playing a quicky character. She may be described the same way by the media. Still, that doesn’t mean she likes the characterization. In fact, Deschanel has reported that she hates the word “quirky.” According to MTV, Deschanel shared her thoughts on the word in an April 2011 interview with Lucky.

In the interview, she said she doesn’t think the characterization is particularly nice. She claims “quirky” is just a nice way of saying weird. While the characterization has stuck, she’d like to see different adjectives used in the future. Deschanel prefers colorful as a way to describe herself and the iconic sitcom character.
