4 Celebrities Who Have Never Attended the Met Gala
The Met Gala might be an iconic event, but it’s also a controversial one. It has grown more controversial in recent years, and this year, with a “takeover” by Jeff Bezos and his new bride, Lauren Sanchez Bezos, could be the most controversial yet. While many celebrities are fine with being seen at the fashion event of the year, others have very strategically avoided it. You might be surprised to learn that these A-list stars have never walked the steps at the Met Gala.
Meryl Streep has never attended the Met Gala
In an ironic twist, Meryl Streep, known for portraying Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, has never attended the Met Gala. Streep has spent five decades in Hollywood and has been asked to attend the event multiple times over the years, but she’s always passed. Rumor has it that it simply isn’t her “scene.”
Still, in 2020, it looked like she’d break her streak. The famed actress was scheduled to serve as a co-chair, which would almost certainly demand her attendance. That year, the gala was canceled due to COVID-19. She did not co-chair the rescheduled event and has passed on it every year since. This year’s snub, however, might be more political than personal.
Jennifer Aniston has never attended, either
Jennifer Aniston is no stranger to the red carpet. Born to an actor and a model, Hollywood is in her blood. Still, she has refused multiple invitations to the Met Gala. Aniston opened up about that decision and why it will never change in September 2025. During a chat with People, the Friends star admitted that such events “overwhelm” her. She admitted that “red carpet” events, in general, make her nervous, despite having attended dozens during her illustrious career.
Aniston went on to admit she’s a “jeans and flip-flops” girl. While she certainly does dress up for big events, most paparazzi shots of the starlet show her as just that. Aniston seems to personify the laid-back California girl vibe and seems content with that. Her new partner, Jim Curtis, appears just as laid-back and low-key as she is.
Leonardo DiCaprio hasn’t “publicly” attended
Leonardo DiCaprio has been a famous no-show for years. The actor has surely been invited to the Met Gala over and over, but has avoided it entirely. In fact, he’s avoided all fashion events, and some experts theorize it has a little something to do with his thoughts on overconsumption and the environment.
While it is true that he’s never walked the steps, rumor has it he actually attended in 2025, but entered the event via a separate entrance to avoid being noticed. A Vogue photographer captured someone who looked like the Titanic star walking through the museum with a woman who appeared to be Vittoria Ceretti. The man’s face was partially obscured, though, so it’s hard to say if it was actually him for certain.
Angelina Jolie has avoided it, too
Brad Pitt’s other ex-wife, Angelina Jolie, has actively avoided the Met Gala, too. Her lack of attendance might be the most surprising, given her theatrical energy and her fashion-forward choices. Still, she’s always been a no-show.
While Jolie has never discussed the decision, we can assume it likely has something to do with her busy schedule and her charity work. Jolie is even less likely to appear now than ever before. The actor is said to be eyeing a move abroad, now that her youngest children are set to become legal adults. With Vivienne and Knox Jolie-Pitt set to turn 18 in July, Jolie has nothing tying her to California. She’s been open about her desire to move out of the country more than once. Her child custody arrangement was the only thing keeping her here, and now that that is ending, the Met Gala probably seems even less important than ever before.
