A Private Note From Jennifer Aniston to Matthew Perry Talks of Fear and Gratitude
As the criminal investigation into Matthew Perry’s death reaches its conclusion with sentencing, his personal possessions are heading to auction. The famed actor’s belongings are set to be auctioned off in June to benefit The Matthew Perry Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to ending the stigma around addiction. Plenty of Friends memorabilia is included, but one photo album, along with a private note, is catching fans’ attention. Inside a photo album from the final moments of Friends is a beautiful note from Jennifer Aniston to Matthew Perry that speaks of fear and gratitude.
Jennifer Aniston penned a note to Matthew Perry as Friends came to an end
The auction will include tons of Friends memorabilia, including scripts signed by the entire cast, but the most attention is being paid to a 2004 photo album. 2004 is the year the famed series ended. Inside the pages of the innocuous-looking album is a handwritten note from Jennifer Aniston. It was penned as they wrapped the series. In it, she wrote about how she would have a difficult time coping without him in her day-to-day life. She went on to recall the fears that consumed her over his addiction issues, and the gratitude she felt toward him for his decision to keep fighting and living.
As she concluded the note, she urged Perry to call her if he needed her, even though she imagined he wouldn’t think to do so. She signed the note “Jenny,” a touch that spoke to the longtime co-workers’ close and unique friendship. The note was decorated with hand-drawn hearts.
The former ‘Friends’ star has spoken about Matthew multiple times since his death
Jennifer Aniston’s note to Matthew Perry, written so many years ago, illuminates the special connection the pair had. Still, it isn’t the first glimpse into their private dynamic that fans have received. Aniston has been open and willing to talk about Perry in the years since his death, though it took her several weeks to find the words immediately following his passing. Three weeks after his death, she took to Instagram to share a tribute to her fallen friend, noting that the cast loved him deeply. She signed off the tribute by telling Perry, “rest, little brother.”
In a more recent appearance, she spoke about her last interactions with him, just hours before his death. She told Variety he was happy and healthy and didn’t seem to be in pain. From what she could tell, he said, he seemed to be doing well. In a conversation with Vanity Fair, however, she touched on the complexities of the cast’s relationship with Perry and the fear of his potential death that followed them. In an introspective moment, Aniston said she took solace in the fact that, at least in death, he was no longer suffering. Still, she has insisted that it saddens her that he never found the peace in life that he deserved.
All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Matthew Perry Foundation, in hopes that those recovering from addiction can find the peace they seek.
