New Season of ‘Alone’ Premieres In June 2025, With 1 Huge Change
The new season of Alone will be nothing like fans have ever seen. For its 12th season, the survival series will be trading the snowy woods of Canada – where the last several seasons have taken place – for Africa. It premieres June 12 on History Channel.
‘Alone’ Season 12 takes place in South Africa
For the first time, Alone heads to Africa, where 10 survivalists will fight to keep themselves alive in the unforgiving Great Karoo Desert. The Great Karoo is a semi-desert and “is South Africa’s answer to the Australian Outback or North America’s Chihuahuan Desert,” according to the Samara Karoo Reserve, a game reserve in the region.
“We are in one of the most inhospitable places on Earth,” someone says in the first teaser for Alone: Africa.
While earlier seasons of the show have filmed in Patagonia and Mongolia, this is the first time Alone has been set on the world’s second-largest continent. Most seasons take place in Canada.
‘Alone: Africa’ will be the show’s most intense season yet
In past seasons, Alone contestants have faced bitter cold and elusive game in their struggle to survive and win the the show’s life-changing $500,000 prize. Alone Season 12 will present a completely different set of challenges. That’s thanks to extreme heat, limited water, and frequent animal encounters with native fauna, including warthogs, scorpions, venomous snakes, baboons, Cape buffalo, and wildebeest. Fans will see impressive shelter builds, creative foraging techniques, significant game harvests, and dramatic medical extractions as the survivalists struggle to master the unfamiliar terrain.
While Alone’s location is changing, the core elements of the competition remain the same. This season’s 10 contestants will be dropped off at remote, undisclosed locations with just 10 survival tools and the camera gear they need to document their experience. The person who lasts the longest wins the grand prize.
“If I was going to get a chance to prove what I can do,” one contestant says, “this is it.”
Alone Season 12 premieres Thursday, June 12 at 9 p.m. ET on History Channel. Two specials, Before the Drop, which introduces this season’s cast, and Most Dangerous Moments, a look back at memorable events from past seasons, will air at 8 p.m. ET on June 12 and June 19.
In addition, a new season of Alone: Australia premieres June 12 at 10:30 p.m. ET. The show moves to its regular 10 p.m timeslot on June 26.
