‘Betting on Beloit’: Konya Is Way Over-Budget on Her Latest Reno [Exclusive Clip]
Real estate agent and renovation expert Konya Hendricks Schuh may have bitten off more than she can chew in her latest renovation. The star of A&E’s new series Betting on Beloit is renovating a dilapidated vintage home in the small city of Beloit, Wisconsin. But as she contemplates some big changes to the house, she also confronts the limits of her budget, as seen in this exclusive clip from the show’s July 19 episode.
Konya wants to bring a vintage home into the 21st century in ‘Betting on Beloit’
Betting on Beloit follows Konya and her team as they purchase and renovate homes in Beloit’s historic district. The projects are a labor of love for Konya, who is the daughter of billionaire businesswoman Diane Hendricks. Hendricks got her start in Beloit, eventually going on to make a fortune thanks to her savvy real estate investments, in addition to co-founding one of the country’s largest wholesale building supply companies. Beloit has fallen on hard times in recent years, but Konya and Diane think they can help turn the city around.
In the upcoming episode, Konya considers the best way to upgrade the primary suite in an older Dutch Colonial. There’s already an en suite bath, but its massive shower is a “waste of space.” Plus, the bedroom closet is small. Her plan? Turn an awkward hall closet and laundry room into a new master closet.
“Shrink the shower down, knock through this wall, and then that creates the new primary closet,” she says.
Did Konya overpay for her latest house?
Removing walls and renovating the master bath is just one of the big items on the to-do list for Konya and her team. There are also issues with warped floors, and the entire kitchen needs to be remodeled.
“I feel like we overpaid,” she confesses. “Shhh. Don’t tell my mom that.”
Konya bought the house for $230,000. She expects to spend $50,000 just on renovating the kitchen and the baths. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
“My guess is we’re going to have to put $200,000 into it,” she says. “Based on square footage, we’d aim to get around $500,000.”
In a struggling town like Beloit, that price might be too much for many buyers to swallow. The median selling price for a home in the city is $200,000, according to Realtor.com.
“I feel like there’s a chance for a break-even on this,” Konya says. “But the problems, they just keep popping up. I don’t know if we’re going to be able to do it.
