‘Boston Blue’ Showrunner Explains Sean Reagan Recasting
The Reagan family story continues in the Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue. The new show follows Danny Reagan as he and his son, Sean Reagan, take new jobs with the Boston PD.
OG Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg is back as Danny in Boston Blue. But a fresh face is stepping into the role of Sean Reagan. Mika Amonsen plays the young cop, replacing Andrew Terraciano, who portrayed the character on Blue Bloods.
‘Boston Blue’ creators wanted a ‘new energy’ for Sean Reagan
What’s the story with the recasting? Boston Blue co-showrunner Brandon Margolis addressed the decision in an interview with Variety.
“We love Andrew and the work he did over the years on Blue Bloods,” Margolis said. But the Reagans are in a different era in Boston Blue, and the time was right for a fresh face.
“Really, it came down to we’re telling a new chapter in both of their lives,” Margolis said. “It’s not just Sean who has joined the family business as it were and is turning over this new leaf, but it’s also now Danny Reagan is the father to a cop, which he’s never been before.”
“So there are all these new storytelling lanes to explore,” he continued. “It felt like there was an organic opportunity to bring in a new performance with a new energy, to help dramatize that change. It is the same character, it’s the same relationship, but it’s also completely different. We love what Mika has brought to Sean, this vulnerability, yet this desire to prove himself. It’s just been great to watch it come to life.”
Who is Mika Amonsen?
So, who is Amonsen, the person stepping into the Sean Reagan role? He’s a Canadian actor who has appeared in shows such as Murdoch Mysteries, Pachinko, Reacher, The Spencer Sisters, Hudson & Rex, and The Republic of Sarah. He also appeared alongside Patrick Dempsey and Rick Hoffman in Eli Roth’s horror film Thanksgiving. That movie was set in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and Amonsen said he was thrilled to get the chance to play someone from Bean Town.
“As a young actor, I’d fantasize about playing a character from Boston, especially a character reminiscent of my heroes like Matt Damon,” he told Numero Netherlands.
Amonsen, who lives in Toronto, also “found early creative success as the lead guitarist of a Toronto-area rock band,” according to CBS. “The group produced a 10-track album, performed across local venues, and opened for Canadian legend Kim Mitchell.” But Amonsen soon realized he wasn’t cut out for a career as a working musician.
“I was home-schooled in a town with 500 permanent residents,” he said. “The idea of breaking free, making music, socializing, and hitting the road was a fantasy. Even though we had some success, it quickly became clear to me that music as a full-time pursuit is by far one of the hardest. I sympathize with musicians deeply.”
