‘Boston Blue’: Tom Selleck Throws Cold Water on Idea of Frank Reagan Cameo in ‘Blue Bloods’ Spinoff
Tom Selleck doesn’t have any plans to put on his NYPD uniform again.
Soon after the Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue premiered in October, speculation began to swirl that Selleck’s Frank Reagan character might make an appearance on the show. Both Bridget Moynahan and Marisa Ramirez have already reprised their Blue Bloods roles on the show, which follows Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan as he takes a new job with the Boston PD.

Wahlberg has said he’d be thrilled if Selleck stopped by for an episode of the new police drama. (The Magnum P.I. star played Reagan family patriarch and NYPD commissioner for all of Blue Bloods‘ 14 seasons.) Wahlberg recently told Parade that he “spoke to Tom the minute I was deciding if this was something I was going to do,” adding that Selleck was “very supportive” of the show.
“I can say, would I love for Tom to come up to Boston? Sure. Or would I love Danny to go to New York and visit Frank? Absolutely, yes,” the NKOTB member continued. “Tom’s always going to base his decisions on the work and material, and so yes, of course, I’d love to work with him on the show, and when the time comes, we will hopefully craft an idea that moves his heart and makes him want to do it.”
Selleck isn’t sure about appearing on the ‘Blue Bloods’ spinoff
Wahlberg might be eager for a reunion, but Selleck is indicating that he’s put his time as Frank Reagan behind him. While he calls the cancellation of Blue Bloods a “huge disappointment” and admits he doesn’t understand why CBS chose not to renew the show, which was “the sixth most popular series in all of television,” he sees Boston Blue as its own thing.
“I don’t know if I would do Boston Blue — that’s another show,” the Motor City native recently told Hour Detroit. “I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan.”
But that doesn’t mean Selleck, 80, is thinking about retiring. Instead, the Three Men and a Baby star is considering a turn back toward comedy.
“I can’t predict the future,” he said. “But I would like to do a comedy because I’ve done a few that were successful.”
Still, he has nothing but love for the Blue Bloods cast.
“I’ve been on a lot of sets that were miserable where the cast didn’t like each other, but in Blue Bloods, everyone was professional and everyone liked each other,” he said. “That is so rare.”
