What to expect from the ‘Call the Midwife’ Christmas episode

This year’s Christmas special will see some of the show’s characters traveling abroad for the holidays.

“Senior members of the convent embark on a mercy mission, swapping the snowy East End of London for the sun-drenched terrain of Hong Kong,” according to PBS’s synopsis. “The rise in hospital births, and wider changes in the NHS, have clipped their wings. But their mission to the Far East is a chance to take flight and work out what really matters. For her part, Sister Julienne suddenly finds herself excited about the Order’s future. After years of battling change, she decides to embrace it and see what love can do.”

The two-part special is “completely new territory,” Laura Main, who plays Shelagh Turner, teased to Radio Times earlier this year.

“It is full of nostalgia for those 1970s Christmases, but it has got a lovely, diverse ring to it,” creator Heidi Thomas added. “Literally, we also cover Hanukkah, we celebrate the Jewish feast of lights, and there’s the whole Chinese, Hong Kong dimension. So it feels very, very rich.”

“It’s very much like a melting pot of communities, it’s not just about one community,” she continued. “It’s about people coming together in the depths of winter and creating something bright out of the darkness, which is just lovely.”
