While speaking with Jay Shetty on his podcast, On Purpose, Cardi B discussed success, raising kids, and moving on from failed relationships. Like so many of her other interviews, she was candid about growing up with very little and evolving into the musician and mother she is today. During the discussion, Cardi explained how big names in the industry didn’t earn their success by accident. She name-dropped Beyoncé as one of the “hardest people” who can’t be matched.

“If you notice a pattern, they work their a** off,” Cardi said via Firstnews Music’s Instagram post. “Think that Beyoncé got a f***ing boat and a mansion and this and that because she’s just Beyoncé? No, she works her a** off. She’s one of the most hardest people ever. Why people cannot get to her level? Why people cannot this and that? Because they just — she just has an insane work ethic.”

Beyoncé’s success is nothing short of historic. With eight studio albums, 35 Grammy Awards — the most ever for a female artist — and over 200 million records sold worldwide, she sets a standard few can even approach. Her tours have grossed more than $500 million, and her influence extends into fashion, film, and billion-dollar business ventures.

Beyoncé previously wrote a handwritten note to the ‘Bodak Yellow’ rapper

In September 2022, Beyoncé sent a heartfelt handwritten note to Cardi B, accompanying a special edition vinyl of her album, Renaissance. The note, penned in silver ink, read:

“To: Cardi B, Hard working, beautiful and talented queen, thank you for always supporting me. Sending so much love to you and yours. Respect, Beyoncé.”

Cardi B shared her excitement on X, expressing plans to protect the cherished gift at all costs. She humorously added, “I’m gonna put it in a glass frame with laser beams on it. Anybody that gets motherf***ing next to it is gonna get electrocuted on motherf***ing site.”

Cardi B convinced record labels to sign her by creating her own success first

Cardi B has a very similar work ethic to Beyoncé. While speaking to Jay Shetty, she explained how she had to fight for record labels to take her seriously.

“I’m not a lazy person, and I do understand my flaws,” Cardi noted. “… Everything that I’m doing at the time, I’m always trying to perfect it. Even when I was a stripper, it’s like, ‘OK, I’m a stripper. But I’m going to be the best pole dancer in here. And I’m gonna f***in’ bust my a**, bust my knees, practice every day so I can be the best at it.’ And that’s the same with music. I’m going to perfect it. That’s the same with my marketing. … I like to perfect things.”

Cardi noted that at the beginning of her music career, labels tried to give her “scraps” for a record deal. And she also thought getting on TV would give her her “big break” as an artist, but it didn’t pan out that way. Despite the struggle, Cardi continued and funded her own concerts with 400-800 people in attendance. She then took the numbers to labels to convince them that she can draw a crowd — and it worked.

“Everything that I did is documented,” Cardi explained. “This s*** isn’t given to me.”
