Cardi B Tells Nicki Minaj to Compare Herself to Her ‘Peers’ in Fresh Social Media Feud: When Did Their Feuding Begin?
Cardi B’s recent pregnancy and new album really seem to have gotten under Nicki Minaj’s skin. Not long after Cardi’s big announcement, Minaj popped off on social media, trolling Cardi B about everything from her new music album to her man, Stefon Diggs, to her children. Cardi B isn’t one to take insults lying down; she jumped right back at Nicki Minaj, advising her to compare herself to her actual peers before accusing her of using drugs while pregnant. The feud popped off so furiously that fans are confused about its origins. Let’s take a look back at where and how it all began. Minaj and Cardi B have a long history of hating on each other.
Nicki Minaj and Cardi B’s feud began way back in 2017
The second Cardi B appeared on the music scene, people began comparing her to Nicki Minaj. It’s an understandable comparison. The rap genre is largely male-dominated, so having two female rappers experience so much success so quickly was a bit of an anomaly. Still, the comparison isn’t one Minaj or Cardi B cared for. Almost instantly, a rumor of tension between the two female rappers emerged.
According to People, the drama started in the spring of 2017, when Minaj allegedly liked shady comments directed towards Cardi B’s music. Later that same year, they were both involved in a music project together, with Cardi B being a late addition to “MotorSport” by Migos. Rumors swirled that Minaj didn’t like the last-minute addition or changes made to her verse to accommodate Cardi B. She later called Cardi B disrespectful.
A physical altercation pushed the feud to another level
The feud grew exponentially when the artists got into a physical altercation at a party. In September 2018, at the Harper’s Bazaar Icons party during New York Fashion Week, Cardi B and Nicki Minaj had to be separated after a melee. According to several sources, Cardi B reportedly threw a shoe at Minaj. Cardi B left with a large bump on her head, which Minaj just made fun of again on X (formerly Twitter).
According to Glamour, Carbi B blamed the melee on comments she says Minaj made about her child. Minaj denied ever bringing Cardi B’s child up, and insisted she was “humiliated” by the scene. Minaj later blamed Love and Hip Hop star, Rah Ali, for starting the fight, claiming she hit Cardi B first. Cardi B apparently is still angry about Ali’s involvement. Ali recently claimed to have a second run-in with Cardi B at an airport in France.
The tension between Cardi B and Nicki Minaj quieted down for several years, with only subtle digs at each other on social media and reports of tension behind the scenes. Nothing particularly public happened until this week.
Album sales spark current feud
Bringing us to the present day, Nicki Minaj reignited the feud that had been simmering quietly when she took to X to claim Cardi B’s album was a flop and mocked its pricetag and sales. She went on to compare her record sales to Cardi B’s before moving on to more personal attacks. She suggested Stefon Diggs had an STI, poked fun at her divorce from Offset, and then called Cardi B’s daughter Kulture ugly. Several of those tweets have since been deleted.
For her part, Cardi B attacked Nicki Minaj over her age, fertility, child’s development, and marriage. In one scathing Tweet, Cardi suggested Minaj compare her record sales to her actual peers, like Taylor Swift, Drake, and Rihanna, who all entered the music industry around the same time as Minaj. Minaj’s first album was released in 2010; Cardi B, a decade younger, released her first album eight years later. In another, she attacked the mother of one’s son, claiming he was “banging spoons” together instead of speaking. She made comments about her fertility, claiming her eggs were “scrambled.”
Minaj and Cardi B’s feud has drawn plenty of attention, with fans on both sides becoming involved. Will it translate into better record sales, though? Their social media feud has certainly caught everyone’s attention. Minaj is set to release another album in just a few months. Cardi B’s most recent album, Am I the Drama? dropped on September 19.
