Chance the Rapper is opening up about his evolving friendship with Kanye “Ye” West. In a recent interview, Chance was asked whether he had spoken to West recently. And he had a funny answer fitting for his relationship with the controversial rapper.

Chance the Rapper says he’s ‘sure’ Kanye ‘Ye’ West is ‘fine’

Chance the Rapper and Kanye “Ye” West share a deep creative and personal bond. Chance has often described West as a mentor and someone he’s looked up to since hearing The College Dropout in 2004. He told Pitchfork that “he’s been there for me” since the year of the album’s release. Their artistic partnership led to Chance’s guest appearance on West’s 2016 album, The Life of Pablo (notably on “Ultralight Beam”), and West later appeared on Chance’s mixtape, Coloring Book.

In October 2025, Chance spoke on The Adam Friedland Show about his relationship with West. “When College Dropout came out, I was in fourth grade,” Chance explained. “That was the first hip-hop album I ever had.”

While speaking to stand-up comedian Adam Friedland in an interview, Chance addressed whether he has spoken to West recently. Friedland asked Chance if West is “alright,” and Chance didn’t have a clear answer.

“You know what’s so crazy is people ask me that like I’m his therapist,” Chance noted. “Like, I don’t know. I’m sure he’s fine. I think he just did a sold-out show in Korea, or something like that — huge show in Korea. But I haven’t texted him recently, that’s the point.”

While talking on the podcast New Rory & Mal in August 2025, Chance the Rapper opened up about where his friendship stands with Kanye “Ye” West in more recent times. Chance admitted that he hadn’t spoken to the rapper in awhile. Given what he recently told Adam Friedland, it seems Chance and West aren’t speaking regularly.

“I haven’t talked to him in a long time,” Chance noted, adding that none of his and West’s sessions made it to his 2025 album, Star Line. “He’s one of the most influential people in my music, you know what I’m saying? He was at my wedding. Our kids have hung out together. So like, I always love Kanye. But, just being honest, no, I haven’t talked to him in a while. I feel like I’ve been hella busy. I’m working on s***. He’s obviously been busy.”

Chance added that he doesn’t want to “diss” West, as there’s no beef between them. And he also doesn’t want to perpetuate any negative stories. “I haven’t talked to him in a long time, but that’s just people,” he continued.

Chance also said that he doesn’t anticipate having a conversation with West about “fixing” him and changing his behavior.

The ‘Cocoa Butter Kisses’ rapper once called Kanye West his ‘favorite’ artist that he followed

Chance the Rapper had great words to say about Kanye “Ye” West in 2018. The rapper told Complex’s Open Late host, Peter Rosenberg, that he enlisted West’s help on his seven-track album at the time, according to Billboard.

“Working under him, working with him on his albums is crazy, but having him tell me that he wants to produce my album and come to Chicago is like …. This month, we’re working in Chicago,” Chance explained.

“Kanye’s my favorite rapper that I followed, you know, without knowing for a long time, and Donald Glover’s the first rapper that ever was like, you know, ‘Come on tour with me, I like your s*** that no one’s ever heard of’ …,” he continued.
