After almost a decade of ups and downs, starts and stops, most of which played out on camera, Cory Wharton and Taylor Selfridge have officially split. The Teen Mom alums have gone their separate ways before, but this time it seems to be for good, and Taylor isn’t holding anything back. Let’s take a look back at how the couple’s relationship played out.

How did Taylor Selfridge and Cory Wharton’s relationship start?

Taylor and Cory met in true reality TV couple fashion: on a TV show. The duo first connected while filming MTV’s Ex on the Beach in 2017. On the dating series, reality TV stars and celebrities have their love lives complicated by the arrival of their exes. Cory and Taylor connected during the show’s inaugural season, but their relationship was never particularly smooth.

Their early romance was complicated when Cory learned he was a father. His ex, fellow Challenge alum Cheyenne Floyd, had given birth to his daughter, Ryder. Despite the upheaval, Taylor and Cory dated off and on between 2017 and 2019 before deciding to make things really official.

They welcomed two children together

Their relationship had to get serious quickly in April 2020, when their first child together, Mila, was born. The couple had been featured on Teen Mom OG, but things soured that June, when MTV dropped Taylor over past racist social media posts and pulled the couple’s birth special for Mila. In June 2022, the couple announced the arrival of their second daughter, Maya.

Maya’s birth was complicated by a congenital heart defect that required close monitoring and a series of surgeries. The couple spoke openly about the tricuspid atresia diagnosis and what it would mean for Maya as she grew. Her first surgery took place shortly after birth, with a second seven months later. There have been several more medical procedures and scares along the way, which the couple has been open about on social media.

Where did Taylor and Cory’s drama really begin?

Taylor and Cory’s early relationship was dotted with starts and stops, but they were fairly vague about what was wrong early on. Later, Taylor said the root cause was Cory’s desire to be “single,” but she didn’t elaborate much from there. On Teen Mom: Family Reunion, the real story came out.

Cory admitted he had cheated early in the relationship. Taylor said she still struggled to trust him and was frustrated that he hadn’t proposed. A fair bit of discussion went on over Cory’s refusal to pop the question, despite living with Taylor and parenting children with her. The couple built a home together, but an engagement never came.

In 2025, reports surfaced that the couple had broken up after Cory crashed out on social media. He later acknowledged they were going through a rough patch but confirmed they were still together. Things didn’t really calm down from there. A health scare for Maya and a flirting scandal rocked them in 2026.

Maya was airlifted to a children’s hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, while Cory was filming Season 42 of The Challenge, and he left the competition to be with his family. During that same season, Cory was spotted openly flirting with fellow competitor Izzy Fairthorne. The blatant flirting enraged Taylor’s followers, with many questioning exactly what he was thinking. When the episodes aired in September, Cory apologized on X, saying he had already apologized privately to Taylor and took full responsibility. That apology clearly didn’t land, though.

Cory and Taylor have officially announced their split

The flirting scandal broke in September, but it took a few more weeks for Cory and Taylor to go public about their changed relationship status. On October 8, Cory was the first to speak out, revealing that he and Taylor had called it quits. He said he was sorry it didn’t work out and that he knew he had fallen short.

The message didn’t sit right with Taylor, who took to Instagram to reveal that she was the one who left. She clearly isn’t pining for her former partner. She said she was tired of not getting basic respect from the man she’d been with for nine years, adding, “I deserve more than that, and I’ll get it.”

The two will continue co-parenting Mila, 6, and Maya, 4. The end of the romance wasn’t all that unexpected. Fans and critics alike have lambasted Cory for effectively wasting Taylor’s time without a proposal. The flirting scandal was just the final straw, it seems.
