Cristiano Ronaldo’s Reason for Delaying His Engagement to Georgina Rodríguez Sparks Backlash
After nearly a decade together, Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez have reached a deeply meaningful milestone in their relationship with their engagement. On Aug. 11, 2025, Rodríguez shared the joyous news via Instagram, accompanied by a radiant photo of her massive oval-cut diamond ring resting atop Ronaldo’s hand, paired with the romantic caption, “Yes, I do. In this and in all my lives.” The heartfelt gesture beautifully punctuates a love story that began in a Madrid Gucci boutique in 2016. So, why did Ronaldo wait so many years to get engaged to Rodríguez? Here’s what he once revealed.
An old clip shows Cristiano Ronaldo explaining why he waited to get engaged to Georgina Rodríguez
Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez’s love story began in mid-2016, when they met by chance in a Gucci store in Madrid, where she worked as a sales assistant. Their relationship went public shortly thereafter at the January 2017 Best FIFA Football Awards. Since then, they have had children together, and Rodríguez has become very involved in the lives of Ronaldo’s other three children.
While Ronaldo and Rodríguez have been serious about each other for quite some time, Ronaldo previously expressed why he wanted to wait to propose. Rodríguez discussed their wedding discussions in her show, I Am Georgina.
“They’re always joking about the wedding: ‘When is the wedding?'” she shared, as seen in a clip on X. “Since Jennifer Lopez’s song, ‘El Anillo,’ came out, they started singing it to me. And, well, this is not up to me.”
In the chorus of Lopez’s song, the pop star sings, “Where’s the ring?”
“I always tell her, ‘When we get that click,'” Ronaldo said in the show while snapping his fingers. “Like everything with our life, and she knows what I’m talking about. It could be in a year, or it could be in six months, or it could be in a month. I’m 1,000% sure that it’ll happen.”
Fans dislike Cristiano Ronaldo’s reason for delaying his engagement to Georgina Rodríguez
Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez can finally celebrate their engagement in 2025. But some fans aren’t happy with Ronaldo’s past feelings about waiting for a “click,” especially given the couple’s family situation.
“Still waiting for a ‘click’ after 9 years and several children together is crazy,” one fan commented on Reddit.
“What exactly does he think will ‘click’?” another fan wrote. “I don’t get what he’s waiting for at all.”
Other fans defended Ronaldo’s comment.
“They have a financial contract though, and he has probably given her millions of dollars by this point,” another fan corrected. “I think it’s fine. No person that rich can risk getting married after they’ve already acquired their assets. It’s not safe.”
The couple has an unconventional family dynamic
Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez have built a close-knit blended family that made fans wonder why Ronaldo didn’t pop the engagement question sooner. Together, they are parents to two daughters, Alana Martina, born in 2017, and Bella Esmeralda, born in 2022. And Georgina has lovingly embraced Ronaldo’s three older children: Cristiano Jr., born in 2010, and twins Eva and Mateo.
In 2017, Ronaldo welcomed twins Eva and Mateo via surrogacy in June. A few months later, Rodríguez gave birth to their daughter, Alana Martina, in November 2017.
Fast-forward to April 2022, and the couple faced heartbreak and joy. Rodríguez gave birth to twins, but their son Ángel passed away during childbirth, while their daughter, Bella Esmeralda, survived. Through the years, Georgina has embraced a loving role within the family, helping raise Ronaldo’s older children as well, and together they’ve nurtured a close-knit, blended family that’s been shared with the world.
