Damon Dash Clarifies Whether He Ever Tried to Romance Beyoncé While She Was Married to Jay-Z
The falling out between Damon Dash and Jay-Z was as public as it was personal, rooted in both business disputes and clashing personalities. As Roc-A-Fella Records grew into a major label, tensions over ownership stakes, creative direction, and management decisions began to strain their partnership. Over time, their friendship deteriorated alongside their professional collaboration. More recently, Dash clarified whether he ever tried to romantically pursue Beyoncé while she was married to Jay-Z. Here’s what he said.
Damon Dash said he never tried to pursue a relationship with Beyoncé during her marriage to Jay-Z
Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s relationship began quietly in the early 2000s. While early rumors swirled, the couple kept their romance largely private, letting their collaborations, like the hit single “’03 Bonnie & Clyde,” speak for their connection. Over time, their bond deepened, blending personal and professional lives. In 2008, they cemented their partnership with a highly anticipated wedding.
In 2004, Damon Dash and Jay-Z had a falling out that affected their relationship forever. Jay-Z accepted the position as President of Def Jam in 2004, signaling the end of Roc-A-Fella Records. In September 2025, Damon spoke to The Art of Dialogue about whether Dame tried to speak to Beyoncé while she was married to Jay-Z. The question appeared to stem from comments that former Roc-A-Fella videographer Choke No Joke made.
“I would never try to talk to another man’s wife,” Damon said. “I mean, I ran into her once, and I think I got her number at a Victoria’s Secret show, but to me, she was like a little girl. So I was going after Gisele [Bundchen]. Giselle, everybody — Naomi Campbell was there. She hadn’t realized her potential yet. I honestly was like, I’ll call you and talk to you. But that was a year or two before …. I never tried to talk to her after that.”
Damon Dash said several women would ‘choose’ him over Jay-Z
While speaking on The Art of Dialogue, Damon Dash confirmed that he would never try to seduce a woman whom Jay-Z was already seeing. However, when women would choose between the two, he said women would choose him “a lot” of the time.
“I never chased his chicks, but sometimes, if there was a choice, they would choose me a lot,” Damon said during the interview. “And sometimes, they would choose him.”
Damon then noted that he never would’ve dated Aaliyah if she and Jay-Z had physical relations. He and Aaliyah dated in 2000 and maintained a serious relationship until she died in a plane crash in 2001.
“I can’t walk in a room and they got that connection,” he clarified. Ultimately, Damon noted that Aaliyah “chose” him over Jay-Z.
He noted that he doesn’t ‘really’ know what Beyoncé ‘looks like’
Damon Dash went on to claim that he doesn’t pay attention to Beyoncé, as her music and dancing often put her in a “sexual light” that he’d rather not pay attention to.
“I don’t even listen to Beyoncé records because I don’t want to want to f*** her,” he continued in his interview. “I don’t want to see her shake her body. … I’ve never … I don’t even really know what she looks like, you know what I’m saying? I don’t really look at her; I don’t listen to her music.”
Damon went on to explain that while he and Jay-Z continue to have problems, he still has enough respect for the Roc-A-Fella co-founder to not act disrespectfully toward Beyoncé, even in his private life.
