D’Angelo and Angie Stone’s Son Swayvo Twain Once Said He Lived in the ‘Shadows’ of His Famous Parents
Just seven months after the death of his mother, Angie Stone, Swayvo Twain is now mourning his father, D’Angelo. The soul singer died Tuesday at age 51.
Swayno Twain was ‘truly building’ with his father D’Angelo ahead of singer’s death
On October 14, Twain (whose real name is Michael Archer Jr.) posted a message to his Instagram Story where he reflected on the loss of his father. The pair had grown closer in recent months after Stone, a successful R&B singer in her own right, was killed in a car accident at age 63.
“I just sat here watchin my daddy die after feeling like it was the first time he and I were truly building,” Twain wrote. “He was there when I needed him most after the passing of momma. Unfortunately, time ran out. I know it wasn’t done with malicious intent, but, today I’m not in any state of mind to make any statements. I wasn’t planning to.”
Twain also shared a clip of his mother from MTV’s Family Legacy. In the video, Stone watches an interview with D’Angelo where he speaks about how he “took time to chill” after he and Stone welcomed their son in 1998.
Stone reacted to her ex’s words with sadness.
“After those 5 years, he pulled away. …He had to walk away from my son and I,” she said.
D’Angelo and Angie Stone’s son tried to ‘separate’ himself from his parents
Both of Twain’s parents were notable musicians. Staring in the mid-90s, D’Angelo topped the charts with a trio of albums: Brown Sugar, Voodoo, and Black Messiah. He also won multiple Grammys. Stone was a member of pioneering all-female hip-hop group the Sequence. Later, she was a member of the R&B group Vertical Hold before releasing two solo albums, Black Diamond in 1999, and Mahogany Soul in 2001. She also collaborated with D’Angelo on his debut album, Brown Sugar, which lead to their romantic relationship.
Twain, a rapper, has said that establishing his own career apart from his famous parents was a a challenge.
“I used to try to separate myself from my parents cause it always felt like I was fated to be in their shadows forever,” he wrote on Instagram on March 26, alongside a video on himself and his mother on Family Legacy. “But thankfully, long before, momma left I learned to embrace them and their legacy full on. I’m blessed and happy to have had this moment with my momma man.
“She would’ve loved this and the fact yall edited this in good faith like promised tells me we’re apart of the paramount family,” he added. “I got faith in yall and I’m glad to have had this opportunity to share my momma with the world.”
