Poot Lovato is out of the basement.

On Thursday, Demi Lovato took to social media to show off her Halloween costume – and to prove that she has a serious sense of humor. This year, the singer dressed up as Poot, her fictional twin sister who has supposedly spent her entire life locked in a basement.

Poot originated a decade age when a fan shared a washed-out, altered image of Lovato on Tumblr, along with the fake backstory. The photo quickly went viral, and a classic meme was born.

“Happy halloween and happy one week of intd!!! been so locked in this era thought i’d let pootvato out,” Lovato captioned the October 30 Instagram post, which also featured multiple images of her dressed as Poot, as well as a video showing how her makeup artists pulled off the transformation.

Lovato’s joking embrace of the Poot meme was a hit, generating thousands of likes and praise from some of her fellow celebs.

“You take the crown my dear,” Katy Perry commented.

“Omg obsessed with you,” wrote Charli XCX.

“This has sent me to my grave,” Kehlani declared.

Over the years, Lovato – whose new album It’s Not That Deep, was released earlier this month – has embraced Poot, occasionally joking about her “twin” on social media. But she wasn’t always a fan.

“When Poot went viral, that actually sucked because I thought that was a real picture of me,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “And I was like, ‘Oh, no. That’s a really bad angle.’ But Poot was photoshopped. Later, I felt better about it because I realized that wasn’t my face. But it was definitely weird when it went viral.”
