Denzel Washington made headlines at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, but not just for his role in the Spike Lee-directed flick Highest 2 Lowest.

On May 20, video of the actor pointing his finger and snapping at a photographer who grabbed him on the red carpet went viral. Following that heated exchange, Washington did not attend a promotional event for the movie the next day leading to speculation that his absence had to do with what happened on the red carpet and he didn’t want to answer any questions if asked about it.

However, Washington’s team has just set the record straight.

A rep for the star told the Daily Mail that Washington was “always scheduled to be in and out of Cannes on Monday. The studio and festival were aware weeks ago, ahead of time, that he would not be available for the press conference (on Tuesday) due to his work commitment on a play.”

Washington is currently starring in an off-Broadway production of Othello with Jake Gyllenhaal.

The pubication also reported that the festival “rearranged part of its schedule to accommodate the acting legend’s presence in order to award him an honorary Palme d’Or” on Monday.
