The Duck Dynasty family is opening up about a difficult chapter in their lives.

Faith and Forgiveness: A Duck Dynasty Love Story premieres May 16. The Lifetime original movie focuses on the real-life relationship between Al Robertson – the eldest son of Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson – and his wife, Lisa Robertson.

“[Al and Lisa] thank you for your courage in sharing your story, but even more than that for all of the ways you have inspired Willie and me in our own marriage to seek forgiveness and choose Jesus and each other continually,” Duck Dynasty: The Revival star Korie Robertson wrote on Facebook.

“This film tells a story of adultery, abortion, and other difficult topics, but in the end, it is a story of forgiveness, grace, and redemption that we all need! I can’t wait for y’all to see it!” she added.

In many ways, Al and Lisa had the quintessential small-town love story. The pair met as teens and quickly fell for each other. They soon married and started a family. But when Al embarked on a career as a pastor, it kept him away from his wife and two daughters.

Lisa, who had been molested as a child, struggled with a lack of support and isolation. Eventually, she reconnected with an old boyfriend and began having an affair. Al found out. Even though he’d been unfaithful early in their relationship, he struggled to forgive Lisa. For a time, it seemed that the marriage was over.

“I think for the first few weeks, I was leaning toward thinking that it was probably over,” Al told Fox News of his reaction when he learned of his wife’s affair. “I was just not sure if I could ever fully trust again. [I wasn’t] sure Lisa really wanted to be in our marriage. Do you really know if your spouse wants to stay? Do they want something more than you have to offer?”

But as Lisa reckoned with the end of her relationship, she found her way back to her faith – and eventually, to Al.

“I changed the way I dressed,” Lisa said. “I changed the way I wore makeup. I changed what I listened to. I changed the way I approached men. I changed the way I talked because I had a potty mouth. I changed so many things. But the first thing was that I cried out to God.”

“I think out of my own appreciation for not only what God had done for me, but also what Lisa had done for me, it gave me that capacity to forgive infidelity,” Al said. “Her growth as a person and as a Christian in those early weeks is what won me over to say, ‘If she has the capacity to change who she is, like I did many years earlier, then I have the capacity to forgive as God forgives.’ That’s when it all changed. We knew we were going to find our way back together.”

Faith and Forgiveness: A Duck Dynasty Love Story airs Saturday, May 16 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime.
