ESPN Kicks Cam Newton to the Curb Amid Shocking Talent Cuts
ESPN is making headlines for its unorthodox approach to talent layoffs. One day after Ryan Clark’s on-air firing led to online debate, Cam Newton has been reportedly sent packing. The cut comes not long after a contract extension made his job with the sports network seem pretty safe. While Newton’s send-off was not nearly as dramatic as Clark’s, it still has fans and industry insiders questioning what is actually happening over at ESPN.
Cam Newton is the latest on-air talent to be booted by ESPN
It appears that ESPN is cleaning house. According to several sources, Cam Newton is out of a job less than two years after signing onto the sports network for the first time. The firing comes as a shock to Newton’s fans. After all, Newton appeared to be doing well for the network. He was doing so well, in fact, that he signed a multi-year contract extension last year.
While fans were surprised to see him go, it must be noted that his tenure was not without drama. He was involved in an ongoing back-and-forth with Patriots quarterback Drake Maye throughout the 2025-2026 NFL season. He made derogatory comments towards women that resulted in backlash, too. His off-screen decisions also had fans questioning where his loyalties actually lay.
Ryan Clark Also Among the Cuts
Cam Newton wasn’t the only casualty of the cuts; Ryan Clark learned he’d been let go in the middle of an NFL Live broadcast. One minute Clark was chatting with other talent, and the next they moved to a lengthy break. When they returned, Clark was gone. Clark is rumored to have become aware of his job loss in the midst of the broadcast.
Longtime SportsCenter anchor David Lloyd, who joined the network in 1997, is also departing, as is Karl Ravech, who was let go after 33 years with the network. Ravech, much like Clark, was let go while actively working on a project for the network. He called an MLB game right before his exit was announced. Stephania Bell, Tom Pelissero and Charles Davis were also fired by ESPN.
Cam Newton has not yet issued a statement about the end of his ESPN run. The shakeup, however, has fans wondering what ESPN will look like when football season arrives again; NFL pre-season is just a month away.
