‘My friend of almost two decades just left us after a brutal battle with ALS,” the Euphoria actor’s friend Mike McGuiness wrote on Instagram. He went on to share his heartfelt memories of a “bucket list” trip to Tokyo the two took before Dane died on February 19 at age 53.
“Covid and ALS did a number on his work life and he sadly couldn’t leave his family with the resources he had hoped,” McGuiness continued. “A gofundme is being made and I will post it on my story for anyone able to help. Love the ones you’ve got.”

The GoFundMe was launched on Friday, February 20. By Saturday, 1,600 donors had contributed a total of more than $226,000.
The biggest donation came from Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and his wife Ashley, who contributed $25,000. The list of contributors also included the names of Arrow star Stephen Amell, actor Alyssa Milano, musician and songwriter Renn Hawkey, and talent manager Guy Oseary.
Fundraiser for James Van Der Beek sparked generosity, as well as controversy
The fundraiser for Dane’s family comes shortly after a GoFundMe for the family of Dawson’s Creek actor James Van Der Beek, who died February 11, raised $2.7 million. Notable Hollywood figures, including Steven Spielberg and Zoe Saldana, opened their wallets to help Van Der Beek’s widow and their six children, But the fundraiser also generated controversy, with critics wondering whether someone as successful as Van Der Beek really needed so much financial support, especially when many everyday Americans are also struggling.
“I can’t help but think that there are families who have lost their breadwinner to cancer in this country who are in much more dire straits than his family,” one person commented on Reddit. “It’s hard for everyone, but if I’m making donations this isn’t who I’d give the money to.”
