HBO’s Girls became one of the most talked-about TV shows of the 2010s, earning more than 20 Emmy nominations and a Peabody Award. Created by Lena Dunham, who starred as Hannah Horvath, the series followed four 20-somethings in New York City. Girls launched the careers of its leading women, with Allison Williams receiving critical acclaim for her role in the 2017 psychological horror Get Out.

Now, Girls is seeing a resurgence in popularity, particularly among Gen Z viewers discovering it on Max and TikTok. Recently, Williams weighed in on the chances of a Girls reboot and where her character is now.

Allison Williams says her ‘Girls’ character, Marnie Michaels, is likely on her second divorce

Allison Williams appeared on Watch What Happens Live alongside host Andy Cohen and guest Meredith Marks from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. Although Williams is promoting her recent projects — rom-com Regretting You and podcast Landlines — the 37-year-old was happy to discuss her beloved role as Marnie Michaels.

Cohen asked, “Where do you think Marnie from Girls is today?” Williams responded, “Oh boy. I think she’s probably looking for her third husband and, um, in the wrong place. This will be a lifelong relearning of the same lesson. She’ll just pick different Desis.” Williams referred to her onscreen love interest, Desi Harperin, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

The pair got married during the first episode of season 5 and divorced by the beginning of season 6. Many fans would not be surprised to hear that Marnie, known for her toxic cycle of questionable relationships, is still spinning her wheels years later.

A ‘Girls’ reboot is very possible, according to Allison Williams

Cohen pressed Williams on a possible Girls reunion. “Does Lena Dunham ever talk about getting the gang back together?” he asked. Williams quickly responded, “Yeah, we talk about it a lot.”

“You do?” the Bravo host excitedly asked. “Yeah,” Williams said. “I would be so excited. That would be so fun.”

“Like a movie?” Cohen clarified. “Yeah, exactly,” the actress stated.

Could Lena Dunham pull off a ‘Girls’ reboot?

Fans would likely be ecstatic about a Girls movie, especially if Lena Dunham stays true to her original characters’ strengths and weaknesses. The dramedy developed a cult following among critics and young audiences, winning two Golden Globes, including Best Television Series and Best Performance by an Actress (Dunham), along the way. Rolling Stone even named season 6 episode 3, “American B****,” one of the 100 Best TV Episodes of All Time.

Girls was also a lightning rod for criticism. Many accused it of lacking diversity and focusing too heavily on privileged white experiences. Others felt the characters were too unlikable. However, many argue that the latter criticism of self-involved characters was very intentional.

The show’s raw depiction of friendship, sex, and post-college aimlessness is still relevant in a post-pandemic world where authenticity and imperfection are prized. If a Girls movie stays true to its beloved characters while incorporating a more diverse cast and NYC experience, we could have a winner in the world of reboots.
