Based on PlayStation’s ancient mythology-themed game, God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
God of War has received a two-season order, and pre-production is underway in Vancouver.
While Hurst is best known for Sons of Anarchy, he has a long list of film and TV credits, including a starring role in the Disney+ series Mysterious Benedict Society, memorable appearances in Bates Motel and The Walking Dead, and roles in Remember the Titans and Saving Private Ryan. Later this year, he’ll be seen in Christopher’s Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey. Previously, he played Thor in PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarök.
Hurst’s roots in Hollywood run deep. As actor, he followed in the footsteps of his dad, Rick Hurst, who is best known for his role on the classic ‘80s action-comedy series The Dukes of Hazzard.

Fans of The Dukes of Hazzard will remember Rick Hurst for his portrayal of dim-witted deputy Cletus Hogg. The actor appeared in the first five seasons of the show.
The elder Hurst also had roles on shows such as The Six Million Dollar Man, Little House on the Prairie, MASH, Baretta, and 227, and the miniseries From Here to Eternity. He also appeared in The Wonder Years, Melrose Place, and Evening Shade.
Rick Hurst died in June 2025 at age 79. Ryan wrote about mourning his father on his Instagram in a post drawing on his Sikh faith.
“Sit in stillness. Close your eyes. Breathe softly. Repeat slowly: Akal… Akal… Akal…,” he wrote.
“Saying “Akal” is not just a ritual,” he continued. It is an invitation to remember: We are more than these bodies. We are light briefly wrapped in form. And when form falls away, the light returns home. That love does not end. It simply crosses into something… Timeless.
