Grimes’ New Face Tattoo Sparks ‘Ringworm’ Comparisons
Claire Boucher, known to music fans as Grimes, has reshaped the idea of a female electronic artist. She is perhaps just as famous for her three-year relationship with Elon Musk, resulting in three children, and her outspoken views on music, tech, and art. Some fans admire Grimes for saying uncomfortable things and refusing to be “packaged.” Others feel she moves from “provocative” to “irresponsible” far too often. The jury’s out on her newest venture: a questionable face tattoo she debuted online.
Grimes debuted her face tattoo on social media
Grimes styles herself as an unpredictable, autonomous creator, so fans aren’t surprised by her recent reveal. The 37-year-old mother of three posted a makeup-free selfie on Instagram. She captioned the image, “Spent like ten years emotionally working up to a face tattoo but I guess I drew on my face too much and literally no one noticed, not even my parents, not even after the video lol. That said I think @glyphomancer is onto something truly novel and innovative with her work esp on face tats- there’s a true beauty, delicacy, and innovation here imo.”
That tattoo in question is circular in shape, placed over her left eye, and intersects her eyebrow. The large design was done in reddish ink, almost resembling a muted scar. The selfie is not an up-close shot, so it’s hard to tell whether the ink is a strong, defined line or blurry along the edges.
Grimes continued with her post, “Feel like tats are in a crazy renaissance period that’s sort of under appreciated atm.” In the comments, she wrote, “Excuse the insane pic had to find one without makeup so there wasn’t any blue.”

Followers aren’t huge fans of Grimes’ face tattoo
Grimes, known for welcoming bold dialogue in interviews and online, did not turn her comments off, seemingly welcoming feedback. Her followers’ input wasn’t super complimentary, although her tattoo artist did comment, “It looks so great on youuu.”
“I remember my first Ringworm..,” one follower wrote. Another said, “You tattooed ringworm on your face?” One more wrote, “this is ringworm claire.” Some fans also expressed surprise that they couldn’t see the Canadian singer‘s tattoo, likely expecting more traditional black ink. However, her LA-based tattoo artist, known as Glyphomancer, specializes in cybersigilism tattoos. This modern ink style blends ancient sigil symbolism with cyberpunk aesthetics.
Although followers made some unkind observations, this face tattoo’s vibe is perfect for Grimes. The “Artificial Angels” singer is known for her experimental blend of fantastical and futuristic aesthetics. Previously, she received a hand-poked white ink tattoo from Glyphomancer. The “alien scar” design covers her shoulders, upper chest, and upper back. In an Instagram story from February 2022, Grimes stated that she’s making a “long slow effort to have a full alien body,” and be “totally covered in white ink.”
