Denise Welch, Matt Healy’s mom, made it known that she has negative feelings about Taylor Swift and the songs she may have written about her son. She slammed the music artist during a recent interview before trying, unsuccessfully, to walk back her comments. As it turns out, Taylor Swift isn’t the only former partner who may have shaded Matt Healy in their music. Halsey once dated the 1975 frontman, and she had might have had plenty to say about him and his mom, too.

Denise Welch takes a shocking swipe at Taylor Swift

British soap star, Denise Welch, made waves earlier this week when she threw barbs at Taylor Swift during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. During the appearance, Cohen asked Welch how she felt about Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department. Welch didn’t offer a ton of commentary on the music, but did take the opportunity to let the world know she didn’t want Taylor Swift in her family. She said she was glad she wasn’t her mother-in-law, then explained how Swift writes about her romances but no one else is allowed to “say anything.” She tried to walk back the comments, insisting she had nothing against Swift, but absolutely no one is buying that story.

Welch’s comments appeared unexpected and unnecessary, considering Swift’s brief romance with Healy ended two years ago. Swift has never publicly confirmed that any of her music references Healy, nor has she openly discussed their brief relationship.

Halsey shaded Matt Healy and Denise Welch long before Taylor Swift

Denise Welch has publicly taken issue with Taylor Swift possibly writing about her short-lived romance with Matt Healy, but someone else did it long before Swift. In 2016, Halsey released a song called “Colors” that fans are pretty confident is about the artist’s short-lived romance with Matt Healy. In fact, one line even seems to shade Denise Welch.

While Halsey never confirmed if the song was about Healy, she did confirm it was about a relationship. During a 2016 appearance on Sirius XM she said, “My song ‘Colors’ is about being in a relationship with someone and kind of watching the vibrancy slowly start to leak out of them, watch the colors start to fade, whether they’re falling victim to drugs or falling victim to work or any sort of negative behavior.”

Halsey may never specifically name Healy, but her explanation, in addition to the song lyrics, makes it pretty obvious who she is talking about. Fans point to one line, “Your little brother never tells you but he loves you so / You said your mother only smiled on her TV show,” as proof she’s talking about Healy. Healy has a younger brother, and his mother, Denise Welch, is an actor. The line seems especially revealing of Welsh’s personality.

Regardless, Welsh has never commented on the song lyrics. Then again, we aren’t sure anyone has ever asked her. If they did, she’d likely have commentary about them, too.
