Savannah Guthrie made an emotional return to NBC’s Today show in early April 2026 after stepping away for more than two months following the disappearance of her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie. Authorities believe Nancy was abducted from her Arizona home. Back at the anchor desk, Savannah told viewers that it was “good to be home” while continuing to navigate the ongoing investigation. And her colleagues, including Hoda Kotb, publicly rallied behind her. Here’s what Kotb said about Savannah returning to the show.

Savannah Guthrie Likely Not Offered Higher Pay to Return to ‘Today,’ Expert Says

Fans couldn’t wait to see Savannah Guthrie’s first day back on Today following Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. While the broadcast largely maintained its usual format, those on set noted a more subdued atmosphere. Savannah avoided delving deeply into her personal situation on air, choosing to focus on the day’s headlines. Behind the scenes, colleagues reportedly rallied around her, making her transition back to live television as smooth as possible.

On April 15, 2026, Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager spoke to Entertainment Tonight about Savannah’s return. Hager called Savannah “amazing” as she navigates immense “heartbreak.”

“Really, I just sit back and marvel at her strength in a time where we wish we could fix it, but we can’t,” Hager continued.

Kotb noted how “difficult” it’s been to support Savannah. “I remember watching Jenna and Savannah come out on that first day,” she reflected. “My heart was in my throat, I was watching it. But, I also saw the support and the love. I saw people on the plaza embrace Savannah.”

Kotb added that she now finds herself staring at Savannah due to her strength. “I’m like, ‘Wow,'” she said. “I mean, the strength it takes to do what she’s doing — I actually don’t know another breathing person who could do it, but she is. Also, I mean she’s going through a difficult time, and she’s showing up.”

Hoda Kotb said it’s been ‘fun’ holding her co-anchor’s hand

Hoda Kotb reflected on Savannah Guthrie’s return at the book launch party for Sheinelle Jones’ book, Through Mom’s Eyes: Simple Wisdom from Mothers Who Raised Extraordinary Humans, in New York City.

“It’s been fun holding her hand,” Kotb told People regarding Savannah on Today. “I mean, that’s been my favorite part.”

Kotb added that she loves “just sitting” beside her co-anchor during this difficult time. “It’s been really beautiful, and I feel privileged to be able to sit there for a little while,” she continued. “… I feel like I get to be in the seat to watch what strength looks like. There’s nobody like her.”
