Idris Elba said there was no truth to the rumors he would be James Bond

Craig played James Bond until 2021. Even long before this, people speculated that Elba would play the character next. He recently said the speculation never had a basis in reality.

“It was never legit,” he told GQ. “It was always just a rumour.”

He said the rumors flattered him, but he didn’t think they were all that believable.

“I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing,” he said. “James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it.”

He added that he didn’t think fans of the franchise would accept a Black man in the role. White men have historically played James Bond, and Black characters still cause controversy with some fan bases.

“Also, I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that,” he said. “Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”

Elba also said that he thinks James Bond films should be pure escapism.

“Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke,” he said. “I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”

At this point, its not clear who will play Bond next.
