‘It’s Not Like That’: Flora Shares a Special Moment With Merritt – Is a ‘John Hughes-Style’ Romance In The Works? [Exclusive Clip]
Flora and Merritt are growing closer in episode 4 of It’s Not Like That.
The new family drama from Wonder Project on Prime Video follows Malcolm (Felicity’s Scott Foley), a pastor and recently widowed dad of three, and Lori (Erinn Hayes), a newly divorced mom of two. Their families used to do everything together, but then everything changed. Now, Malcolm and Lori are navigating being unexpectedly single, and their own complex relationship, while also helping their children through grief and divorce.
In this exclusive clip from “The Space I Keep For You,” Malcolm’s daughter Flora (Leven Miranda) and Lori’s son Merritt (Caleb Baumann) continue to build on their friendship as they lean on each other through life’s challenges.
“I’ve been thinking about it,” Flora says to Merritt. “I think that if two people are into each other, they shouldn’t let anything stand in their way.”
Flora then shyly asks if she can sing Merritt something.
“Of course,” he replies.
She sings a touching tune about feeling close to someone who might not be physically present.
“I hear your song when no one’s near/Cuts through the silence, draws you clear,” she sings. “I talk to stars, I look for signs/You’re still with me in my mind … When it gets dark, and I feel alone/There’s still a place with you inside of my soul … As long as as I breathe/I’ll always keep space for you.”
Flora’s vulnerability in this moment is major step for her, It’s Not Like That creators and showrunners Ian Deitchman and Kristin Robinson told Showbiz Cheat Sheet in an email.
“Flora putting herself out there like this with Merritt is a first for her, an ultimate act of trust and vulnerability,” they explained. “Flora and Merritt have known each other their whole lives, and yet, they’re rediscovering each other now as teenagers, and in the wake of Flora’s mom’s death and Merritt’s parents’ divorce.”
As Merritt and Flora grow more comfortable with each other, could their friendship evolve into something more?
“They’ve realized that they are actually safe havens for one another, and with that, comes the promise of some teen romance, hopefully John Hughes-style! That’s the intention, anyway,” Deitchman and Robinson said.
If Flora and Merritt do act on their growing attraction, it’s easy to see how that could put another wrinkle in Malcolm and Lori’s own complicated relationship. The It’s Not Like That team isn’t sharing any spoilers. But it’s safe to say, there’s more drama to come.
“You’re going to have to keep watching to see how Flora and Merritt’s relationship complicates things for Malcolm and Lori,” Deitchman and Robinson shared, “but it’s certainly not going to make things easier for them!”
It’s Not Like That Episode 4 premieres on Wonder Project on Prime Video in the U.S. on Sunday, February 8. Subsequent episodes of the eight-episode season debut weekly on Sundays.
