Jennifer Lawrence Got Real on ‘Las Culturistas’ — 7 Things We Learned About Her Off-Screen Life
A longtime fan of the Las Culturistas podcast, Jennifer Lawrence visited iHeartRadio in NYC to chat with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers about her starring role in comedy-drama Die My Love. The Oscar-winning actress was thrilled to talk with the beloved pop-culture duo. Lawrence revealed many things about her personal life that fans didn’t know. We appreciated her candid takes on the afterlife, sister culture, and more.
After the podcast aired, Lawrence quickly garnered criticism for her hot take about Lisa Barlow. She made comments about The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star’s cosmetic procedures, saying her appearance was “really bothering” her. Lawrence, known for her honesty with the media, gave even more interesting tidbits that painted a picture of her personal life.
Jennifer Lawrence believes in ghosts
One fascinating part of Lawrence’s conversation with Bowen and Rogers involved her belief in ghosts. The Hunger Games star explained that while filming the dystopian movie series in Charlotte, North Carolina, she lived in a house occupied by spirits. Then, while filming Causeway in New Orleans, Lawrence had to move three times because her residences were haunted. Finally, she moved into a hotel room.
While sleeping in her bed one night, she heard a housekeeper enter. Lawrence assumed the hotel employee didn’t see her under the blankets. She said, “Hi,” and the housekeeper said, “Sorry.” When Lawrence woke up, her door was still deadbolted, meaning no one could have entered from the outside to clean her room. “There was no cleaning lady,” she told the Las Culturistas hosts.
Lawrence is fascinated by ‘sister culture’
The Las Culturistas hosts asked Lawrence about the culture that made you say, ‘culture is for me.’ The Die My Love star said she got really into the Boleyn sisters, explaining that their tragic dynamic was fascinating. “That was the first time I saw sisters as exotic,” she said. Around the same time she read The Other Boleyn Girl, Lawrence watched Newlyweds, the 2000s MTV reality show documenting the marriage of Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson. Then, she watched The Ashlee Simpson Show starring Jessica’s younger sister. “I can’t connect them for you; that is your own journey,” she told Yang and Rogers.
Lawrence has two older brothers. “You were enamored with the idea of sisterhood because it eluded you,” Rogers noted. She agreed. “That was a culture” moment, she stated. “That was my first reality TV [experience].”
That wasn’t her furniture in Jessica Simpson’s old house
In 2014, Lawrence bought her Beverly Hills estate for $7 million. This year, she sold the house, previously owned by Jessica Simpson, for $11 million, reports Home & Garden. Along the way, the press published photos of Lawrence’s romantic, French-style home’s interior. The images showed decor and furniture with vintage aesthetics, weathered finishes, floral fabrics, and a specific rustic style.
“I’m so happy I can address this,” Lawrence told Yang and Rogers. “Everybody in the world” thinks that’s my furniture she stated. “I really have to set the record straight that that is not my furniture.” The Silver Linings Playbook actress continued, “I’ll fuck with a wicker sparingly,” but shabby chic wasn’t her thing. “I live with somebody who does contemporary art, so I really have to squeeze in color where I can.” Lawrence was implying that her husband, Cooke Maroney, an NYC art gallery director, keeps things neutral regarding their home decor.
Jennifer Lawrence still cares about climate change
The star quietly shows her hand with the film projects she picks. During her podcast interview, Lawrence also elaborated that she cares deeply about climate change. The 35-year-old told Yang and Rogers that whenever she travels with her husband, she ends up mentioning climate change in depressing ways. “Whenever we’re at the ocean, I’m always like, ‘Oh my god, imagine how beautiful all this coral would’ve been before it died.’ Like, ‘Wow, our kids are never gonna see bright coral,'” Lawrence said as she laughed.
In addition to starring in the environmental satire Don’t Look Up, Lawrence has stated that she believes climate change is “due to human activity.”
Lawrence is kind to animals
The actress discussed being squeamish about eating weird things, but she wasn’t squeamish about picking up gross things with her hands. She told a hilarious story about what she’s like every day. Lawrence said she was meeting a new person at her son’s school when she saw a worm on the ground “out of the corner of my eye.” The mother of two “squatted” down and picked up the worm to move it, saying goodbye to the person as she walked away with the worm squirming between her fingers. “I had to put him back in the planter box,” Lawrence laughed. “He was going nuts. The sun would’ve come up, and he would’ve been fried.” She acknowledged this likely gave those around her an odd first impression.
Lawrence doesn’t love shopping
The Kentucky native said her mom used to take her to T.J. Maxx to shop. Lawrence said, “I would faint,” implying that she was overwhelmed by the stimulating and busy store. She said she shops “better online.” Yang joked that Lawrence must have loved everything at T.J. Maxx to feel so overwhelmed, making her laugh really hard. “Where do I start?” Lawrence chuckled. “Sorry, T.J. Maxx.”
She doesn’t like group chats or voice notes
Lawrence said she is not very active in group chats. Citing one particularly active group text, the American Hustle star said, “Whenever I respond, everybody’s like, ‘Everyone freeze.’ It’s such a big thing, it makes me not respond even more.” She also isn’t a fan of voice notes.
During Las Culturistas‘ special segment, “I Don’t Think So, Honey,” the hosts and guests each have 60 seconds to rant about an element of culture they find frustrating. When it was Lawrence’s turn, she vented about audio recordings sent as messages. “[A voice note] is the worst, lowest possible form of communication there is,” she said passionately.
