Jennifer Lawrence Throws Playful Shade at Leonardo DiCaprio With ‘Teenage Daughter’ Remark
Some might argue that Leonardo DiCaprio should bless the world with children, given his talent and looks. However, the 51-year-old doesn’t have any kids to carry on his legacy. Assuming he hasn’t managed to hide offspring away from prying eyes, DiCaprio had to draw on his imagination for his role as father and bomb expert, Bob Ferguson, in One Battle After Another.
When he sat down with Jennifer Lawrence to discuss their lives and careers for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, his former co-star managed to sneak in a hilarious dig. Or was it a genuine compliment? We’ll probably never know. Learn more about this funny moment and DiCaprio’s hopes for a family:
Jennifer Lawrence didn’t hesitate to poke fun at Leonardo DiCaprio regarding his ‘teenage’ preferences
Variety’s Actors on Actors features pairs of acclaimed actors discussing their craft, recent roles, and the entertainment industry in intimate conversations. When the Emmy-winning interview series featured former Don’t Look Up co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, fans enjoyed subtle humor and personal stories from both actors’ lives.
DiCaprio’s recent role in One Battle After Another showed the actor portraying the father of a free-spirited teenage daughter. Lawrence noted how this was DiCaprio’s first role as a caring, devoted dad. “I really loved seeing you be a dad in One Battle After Another,” the mother of two stated. “I’m so sad that you don’t have a teenage daughter. You look great with one.”
When Lawrence made the subtle comment, she looked directly at DiCaprio with a straight face. However, those who follow the No Hard Feelings actress know she’s notorious for her witty, biting humor, which she seemed to restrain throughout the interview. As Lawrence observed that DiCaprio looks “great” with a “teenage” woman by his side, he pauses and looks down for half a second, almost like he’s processing whether his fellow Oscar winner just insulted him.
One YouTube user commented on the video, writing, “Jennifer is trying so hard to be serious. I know she’s dying inside to make jokes.” Another commented, “They’re both so testy and friendly at the same time with each other.”
Whether Lawrence meant it as a joke or a dig, fans loved seeing DiCaprio held accountable for his notorious preference for dating women under 25.
Will Leonardo DiCaprio ever have kids?
DiCaprio hasn’t ruled out having children, but hasn’t committed to fatherhood either. When he was in his thirties, The Revenant actor was more open with the press about his hopes for becoming a father. He told Access Hollywood, via OK! Magazine, “Someday that’s absolutely gonna happen. And I look forward to it.” Around the same time, the then-35-year-old told Swiss newspaper Le Matin, “Do I want to be a father? Yes, but I think I have a few more years.”
By 2016, DiCaprio seemed to realize that he wanted privacy concerning his thoughts about family planning. He told Rolling Stone, “If it happens, it happens. I’d prefer not to get into specifics about it, just because then it becomes something that is misquoted.” He continued, “But, yeah. I don’t know. To articulate how I feel about it is just gonna be misunderstood.”
At this point, it seems like DiCaprio is open to fatherhood if and when it feels right. What may factor into this sentiment? DiCaprio’s girlfriends are often in their early to mid-twenties, a time when many women, especially in modeling and acting, are pursuing careers rather than motherhood.
DiCaprio also grew up in an unconventional home and family situation. His parents divorced when he was a toddler, but remained closely involved in his life. DiCaprio grew up around artists, performers, writers, and activists, often attending gallery shows, alternative gatherings, and events that exposed him to adult conversations and ideas far outside the mainstream. These elements may have encouraged the actor to pursue a different path in life.
Regardless, DiCaprio makes time for family, including his parents and his teenage niece, Normandie Farrar, the daughter of his stepbrother, Adam Farrar.
