The The Big Bang Theory universe, created by Chuck Lorre, is still going strong. With each new spinoff, the original series and the universe as a whole amass more and more fans. Still, a direct revival is unlikely to happen. Jim Parsons, the actor who played Sheldon Cooper, is the reason the original series ended and likely why a direct reboot will never happen. Parsons just revealed that he doesn’t see himself returning to the role because he simply doesn’t miss Sheldon.

Jim Parsons slams the door on The Big Bang Theory reboot

Jim Parsons seems to be slamming the door on the idea of a direct The Big Bang Theory reboot. On April 17, Parsons appeared on The View to discuss his current stage project. During the chat, he openly discussed Sheldon Cooper and the possibility of reprising the role. He made it clear that he has no interest because he doesn’t really “miss” Sheldon right now.

While Parsons insists a return to the character probably isn’t in the cards, he did note that he is deeply touched by how much fans still love the show and the character. He suggested that that is part of the reason he shies away from possibly returning, too. He noted that the show worked so well that it was like “lightning in a bottle.” Returning likely wouldn’t yield the same results, so he sees no point, he argued.

What does the rest of the cast think about it?

While Parsons isn’t interested in returning to the show, at least not right now, other cast members are absolutely open to reprising their roles. Kaley Cuoco has been the most vocal about her interest in returning to her beloved character of Penny. Cuoco told People back in 2024 that she would return without question. She noted that she loved the character and had the most fun of her career on the set of The Big Bang Theory.

Mayim Bialik and Kunal Nayyar have both been open to the idea, too, with each noting they’d return if given the chance. Bialik famously returned to acting after an academic hiatus to play Amy Farrah Fowler. Nayyar portrayed Rajesh Koothrappali, a selectively mute astrophysicist. Johnny Galecki, who portrayed Leonard Hofstadter, might be a tougher sell. After spending most of his life on TV and in the public eye, Galecki has been enjoying a period of relative quiet since moving to Tennessee in 2019.
