Kail Lowry of ‘Teen Mom’ Admits Her Plastic Surgery Addiction Is a ‘Mental Illness’
Kail Lowry can’t stop herself from going under the knife.
The Teen Mom alum recently opened up about her history of plastic surgeries and the insecurity that drives her dissatisfaction with her appearance. The former MTV star says she knows she has a problem, but that getting to a point where she truly feels comfortable with herself is hard.
People keep telling Kail Lowry to ‘stop getting surgery’
Over the years, Kail has had a number of procedures and surgeries, including tummy tucks, liposuction, and breast surgeries. Most recently, she had a procedure to remove her double chin. The laundry list of surgeries has made her a target of critics.
People keep telling her to “stop getting surgery, stop getting surgery, stop getting surgery,” Kail said on the September 22 episode of her Karma & Chaos podcast. But it’s not that simple, especially when it’s so easy to hyper-focus on her appearance thanks to social media.
“I get it. I mean, it’s your face,” Kail’s podcast co-host Becky Hayter said. “You’re seeing yourself on, like, a million different accounts. Every time you pop on your phone you’re seeing yourself at every different angle. So it’s hard. People don’t understand that part of it … I don’t think people understand what it’s like to watch yourself all the time. It’s very jarring and you start picking up on things that you never would have otherwise been insecure about.”
‘Teen Mom’ alum begs people to ‘stop bullying me’
Kail said she can’t help but being affected by the criticism, especially when she goes online and hears her “stupid ass baby daddy talking about ‘she cut off her gobble neck.’”
“Why are you doing this? You’re a bully. Stop bullying me,” she said.
“You can help that you’re a dickhead,” Kail added. “I can’t help that I have a double chin.”
The negative feelings can be overwhelming, Kail said, adding that she sometimes felt “suicidal.” She acknowledged that her desire to alter her appearance might not be healthy, but said that she struggled to change her behavior.
“It’s so hard because I would look at myself and I would see the double chin and I would see the jowling here,” she explained. “I don’t want my daughter or other people to feel like they need to get surgery to feel good. But like I don’t know how to get out of it. Therapy can only help so much … what is the solution? Just not to look online at myself. I don’t know what the solution is.”
Kail Lowry is ‘working on’ her mental health
Becky suggested that Kail could start by “changing how you talk about yourself.”
Kail agreed that shifting her internal narrative was important. But that’s easier said than done.
“Because it’s f*cking mental illness,” she said. “Like I’m aware and I do it anyway.”
Becky reminded Kail that she wasn’t alone in her struggles and that many women struggle with self-esteem issues related to their appearance.
“I think there are so many people who silently support you,” Becky said. She also urged people to be kinder.
“Instead of dogpiling on someone who, obviously their insecurities are running the show at that moment, how is that helpful?” she said. “…Yes, that is a mental health issue and that’s not going to get fixed overnight. And you’re working on it.”
“I’m working on it,” Kail agreed.
